I was recently watching a video about a dude customizing his joystick for Elite Dangerous. He was using a 3rd party program that altered the sensitivity. CCP should spend some time/energy in improving the sensitivity settings on the controller. As it is now, it appears there is a linear relationship between moving the stick and the speed of rotation of the reticule. You have to choose between a slow turn speed and fine aiming, or fast turn speed and overly-sensitive aiming.
The solution is to implement control settings like in other FPS games. Destiny has a fantastic feel to the aiming and I think the sensitivity curve for DUST should be reverse-engineered from it.

Pretty sure you're talking about aim acceleration/sticky hitboxes.

Every game with gamepad controls needs a customizable non-linearity setting. Preferably set to something else than purely linear input by default. |

For what it's worth, I simply cannot play Dust anything other than a DS3; despite how fragile the sticks are, they do have the lowest input threshold when moving and looking. 3rd party controllers make aiming impossible for me.

In DUST I believe at 50% of stick moment will rotate at 50 units per second 5% = 5 units etc. Other games don't work this way. It's still 100% = 100 units, but there is a sensitivity curve. So at 10% it may only be 2 units/sec, at 30% maybe it's 12 units/sec, but this catches up towards the end of the curve so at 90% it may be 80 unit/sec and by the end you still have the full rotational speed. That's what's going on in the software the guy in the video I linked is using.
It's not related to aim assist. Aim acceleration may also play into this, but it's a different concept. Aim assist would be like moving the stick to 20% and it accelerating the turn speed to 20 over time. In this case it's still a 1:1 ratio, but it takes time to get there.

This could be done by mounting a controller to a board, drilling a hole into the center of a joystick and inserting a long metal rod into the right stick. Fire up Destiny and use a capture card to time the rotation speed at different angles of the stick for different sensitivity settings. Throw the numbers in an excel spreadsheet and run a best fit curve to figure out what the sensitivity curves are for Destiny. Use those same settings for DUST. I bet a QA person could screw around with this and come up with the numbers in a 2-3 days.
Destiny had such a good feel due to a heavy use of auto aim. Though given I never tried it without auto aim on. |
