Here's a rough idea of what Splatoon does well:
Splatoon
-Wii U competitive shooter
-Monthly events for rewards that upgrade your gear
-New inventory of gear cycles daily
-Maps and game modes cycle every few hours
-Shorter, less competitive "turf war" gamemode
-Matchmaking between battles is so short I can't even check facebook
-Matchmaking based on "ranks"
Let's focus on the underlined parts

-You want to get online to check what is available
-Lets you tune your loadouts to best suit the maps and gamemodes, rather than just using whatever is the best universal weapon
-Matchmaking is super fast and much more balanced
Matchmaking based on ranks
-Winning battles increases your rank, losing battles decreases your rank
-Winning against high ranked players gives you more points, winning against lower ranks earns less points.
-Losing against high ranked players takes away less points than losing against players of similar rank
-Encourages matchmaking with similar ranks
-Adds more progression, another reason to keep playing
Sure, it limits players from doing exactly what they want to do, but having larger pools of players to match with, along with shorter queue times means a better experience overall. Maintaining a rotation keeps the randomness, while still allowing players to learn a map or try different strategies based on what happened in the last match they can learn from.
Something like having one queue for non-ranked squadless matchmaking, and a second one for ranked with squads allowed, each one having a different type of gamemode rotated in every few hours.

Maybe if it was limited to just pubs while FW and PC get the current setup.
PS: I also play Splatoon. If anyone is interested in being my friend, my Nintendo ID is MakenTosch (note the lack of spacing). I would love to squad up with you guys during the weekend if I ever need a break from Dust.
