Smoke would be great to add. It can help with cover from snipers. Work as a Dropship Pick up beacon and help in building infiltration.

+1 on SMoke,
although since this is space combat with no atmosphere,
call it something Spacey like "nano obscurement kaos emitter" or NOKE :)
or better "jettisoned obscurement kit emitter" or JOKE ! |

how about TOKE - Team Obscurement Kloud Emitter :)
then you could also sell Counter-Toke thermal vision for equipt. |

I love the idea of a smoke grenade, but since we're all in high tech gear with giant full facial helmets (like iron man eh) maybe instead of actual smoke it should be some sort of electrical interference device. It could be DROPPED like a repair module and have a bubble it emits (but a much larger one) just like the repair modules. From the outside looking in you just see a big dome of partially pixelated garbage, and from the inside looking out you have the same pixelation. The percentage of pixelation could correlate to the tier it's in. A miliitia level might just obscure the view by 10 or 15%, but a prototype level device might pixelate the view by 50%. |

I approve this message (the addition of some sort of smoke). |

I'd second Baal Roo's idea. Seeing as this is supposed to be a sci-fi game, it doesn't make sense for ordinary (or even enhanced) smoke to be much of an obstacle. The idea of something though that visually distorts an area makes a lot more sense. You could even have it in three varieties.
One would be attempted total cover, where unless an enemy is really close they can't see the area very much at all. The second variety would be one that distorts a players location, so that enemies can see them but they would be sort of shadowy and more importantly the image will be displaced a little. The third type would be one that again distorts it so teammates in the area are shadowy but also create fake shadowy images that to the enemy would look just like a player.
The first idea provides complete cover, whereas with the second and third types it would have the enemy guessing whether they are shooting ghost images or actual players.
Also, I like the idea of some kind of beacon to signal a location. Even if it was just a column of light. As a dropship pilot it's a pain to figure out where someone wants me to pick them up on the rare occasion a ride is asked for. |

+ 1 for the Ewar ideas in place of smoke etc. Cant wait to see these ideas develop.
Edit: The signal markers would be ace for us airborne types too cool idea havign abeam of light tho its a two way sword i guess. |

I'm quite happy for the other team to see my marker. I can already picture finding a nice ambush location, putting down a beacon, then killing everyone on the other team that comes to investigate. |

Beacons would be great also +1
So make the smoke a magnetic ion cloud or something? I can see someoneGÇÖs HUD looking all scrambled like in Dues Ex. |

My take on a 'smoke grenade' of sorts would be a canister of nano-scale particles of some element (aluminum comes to mind, personally) that disrupt active scanning and obfuscate thermal imaging to make it pointless but try to see through it visually. That's if the goal was to create a 'smokescreen' Explosions still block our view so it feels kind of congruent to me if it was still displayed visually as a smoke cloud. (Would be a lot easier on the art/code team, too.) |

hmmm, do you say this because the area inside the dome would not be obscured? this is a good point. Maybe the entire dome is pixelated, even to those inside it. a visual scrambler |

Not sure about the smoke, mostly because it may be hard for CCP to fit that into the game engine. Smoke has always been a rather resource intensive thing to add, so unless the planned for it from the beginning it may not fit into the engine.
Beacons on the other hand should be easy. And would be of great use. |

Agree to a point. The Unreal engine can handle Smoke ( Its been shown in Gears of war and Bullet storm) Are you talking more of server space and memory? |
