Good interview but....
LOL. Absolute mobile style progression and monetizing in a console game and basing a mobile game on upfront sales.

Lol, I highly doubt that. Eve Online operates under a subscription mechanism and Dust 514 operates on micro-transactions, both are unique in their approach however the overall premise strikes true: Continued, long-term revenue generation for ongoing development.
Both games offer up that MMO experience in that it never stops evolving and offering an upfront charge to that would be silly unless it was a one-off game that expected a sequel or additional title.

Oh the micros will still be there. Just with a $20 entry fee.
And I'm just being a nuisance, so don't take me serially.

So next fanfest will CCP Rouge finally announce that the vision for Gunjack can only be fulfilled by porting it to PC/Rift? And then thanking the community for their loyal support anyways, of course.
No wait, he'd first have to release a beta so that people actually invest in the Gear VR headset before abandoning it. Otherwise there would be insufficient levels of dismay.
I'm just joking. Lots of water under the bridge and stuff like that, but he'll have to endure the spite for a bit longer. |

"Mobile VR doesn't have to mean [physically] moving around, but rather something you can access as easily in a caf+¬ or a plane as you can at home. It was a choice made from day one: to create a fun and accessible experience by being static."
Could you imagine if you're sitting in coach and some random dude sitting next to you proceeds to pull out a VR headset and play Gunjack next to you? It's like the setup for a bad sketch comedy scene. And who goes to a cafe only to put one of these things on their face? It makes no sense. I'll buy $50 worth of AUR if CCP Rouge goes to a local Shanghai cafe and plays Gunjack for a significant period of time. The entire premise of "mobile VR" is absurd.
Best PvE idea ever!

First, thanks BAMM HAVOC for posting this and other stories as you've done in the past. Keeping us in the loop!
Second, the VR thing. You can not understate what it is and what it means to the internet and how society will interact in the very near future.
CCP, as a company, finds itself at a very important place, as this new frontier in, not just gaming, but human digital interaction takes shape. Their relationship with Oculus, and now with Samsung, puts them in an even more advantageous position to gain traction in this developing industry.
I feel like DUST, as a product line, is like the Pony Express just as the transcontinental railroad was getting launched.
We were the new frontier for CCP, MMO/FPS on console to bring the masses to New Eden.
But you cannot ignore VR. It's too big and if you don't get there first and lead the way you'll just be the guy with a lot of ponies looking for a train ticket.
But Aeon makes a good post pointing out CCP's broadening income streams and diverse platform coverage: EVE is PC subscription based, DUST is console microtransaction fueled and now, Valkyrie and GunJack are breaking into a whole new area of untested developmental and financial potential.
I hope we can port to PS4. That would secure the third leg of CCP's game platform and revenue growth.
I wish CCP would speak to us more often but DUST is not EVE and we have a lot of pony **** to clean up before we get on the train. |

Yes, DUST will be getting turned into a simple first person VR view where you shoot a bunch of NPC soldiers running at you. That is correct. Talk about saving on resources!
