Have you ever wondered why you keep creating new characters over and over again? If it is due to the fact that you get tired of dying, then you're not the only one. You get angry at your clones because you are unable to stand a chance against a prototype opponent and so you decide to start a new name in hopes that this time you build the perfect soldier. Well, repetition makes perfect, but quitting is not the solution. However, know that, in part, it's not your fault to act in such a way. The blame should be to the matchmaking process of the game; they allow colonel and generals to bully on recruits. For the record, the 'general', 'colonel', 'captain' and whatnot ranks basically say how much money you've spent on the game. Very few people have high ranks and haven't bought a fuckton of AUR or the bundle packs. You can be the worst player the game has ever seen and still have a high rank if you've got the cash for it. So don't judge player skill by their 'rank'.
Getting on topic, though, while separating battles by gear (also known as meta-locking, and is something that's been brought up before) would fix the proto stomping newberries in militia or standard, new players still have the disadvantage. Veterans can choose to go into Standard only matches and still wipe the floor with new players because they'll have leveled up their skills, giving them extra HP (shield and armor), better aim (sharpshooter skill), faster reloads, more ammunition, more weapon damage, and also whatever role bonuses they get from their dropsuit skill levels. The matches would still be heavily skewed toward the veterans. There's not really much you can do to fix that.
Creating a new character in order to try to create a 'better' one, though, is never the answer. If anything, you've made it worse for yourself because you've set yourself back to square one with all the newb gear and no SP or ISK. The best thing you can do as a new player is to keep trucking, join a corp that wants to help you (and if they don't actually try to help you, leave and find another) and squad up so you can stay with a group and have someone to watch your back. Having friends in this game is possibly more important than individual skill. And you'll get that as you play the game, regardless. |

Fair?
FAIR!?
That word doesn't exist in the EVE Universe. As long as an item can be used to obliterate your oponent it's fine. Fairness among equipment levels is as far as you are going to get.
At a point players have to take responsibility for their own skill level. Tiered matchmaking is not a solution because there is no problem. As long as players know the basic controls of the game everything else will happen naturally.

... I 've read this opinion many times before. And I have to say I disagree...
Yes they will have the skill bonus advantages, but they will have similar armor/shields, not be as jumpy, not do extraordinary amounts of damage (weapon upgrades/protoguns), and won't be lightning quick.
For example, a fully maxed out combat rifle proficiency gives you +25% v armor. That is +0 v shields (no damage mod advantage). And with the standard Combat Rifle doing 16 damage per shot, it will go up to 20 (rough numbers)... But that will be it... It is going to completely change the batt;efield... You might start seeing veterans QQing and quiting, instead of the new blood, which frankly, the game needs.
Meta-locking is going to make everything better. The veterans will have an advantage, but it will be A LOT less. And you will find that a lot of the annoying play styles seen in the game will not happen in a meta locked game because they rely heavily in some proto gear, even if it is only proto-modules.
And that is why, this is being fought... Because many of the easy-mode options will go away... |

Recycling characters is the worst thing you can do because you lose that skillpoint investment. Training up the core skills(the skills that apply universally to every dropsuit/weapon in the game) makes a big difference, but it takes a while. Stick with it.
As an alternative create a pile of psn accounts and create 10 separate characters in Dust - while you play, learn and get eaten alive by slavering power-mad vets your other accounts will all be earning passive skillpoints - when they have 10 million or so sp you can start thinking about what you want them to be.
If you limit yourself to a few roles per character and focus on only a few weapons systems(eg uplink scout, bread & butter assault, AV commando) then by the time you hit 40 million sp you'll have a character with solid core skills. Once those cores are trained up you can very quickly become viable in any other infantry role you desire.
The above advice can make things a little better and allow you to explore the game more freely, but others have already made the key observation: good gear or crappy, core skills or not, you will live and die by your personal pvp skills and also by your knowledge of the many interacting systems in Dust.
Some tips:
- Never stop moving and keep your head on a swivel.
- Only engage when you know you're going to get the kill.
- Before engaging make sure you have some cover and a fallback route.
- Vets can see you but you can't see them - train up your ewar skills early.
- Put out uplinks in safe places - saves you from spawn-camped deaths, gets you WP/sp and helps your team.

Who the hell recycles characters and loses their SP forever when there is a respec available now??
Recycling should only be for extreme circumstances anyway...Like my first account where I completely ignored the core skills and put everything into Assault rifles and SMGs...I also dumped a lot of SP into turrets because I thought that would give me the ability to drop new turret installations on the map, and I specced into corporations because I thought that's what everyone had to do...
I was probably 10-12 million SP into that account before I realized how badly I was screwing myself... |

A player that is good at FPS games will kill you in Militia gear just as easily as he can in Prototype gear.
Locking matches out based on Meta Level will only further fragment the playerbase and result in even fewer actual matches being played, due to there now being even less players queueing for the same thing thanks to the Tier separation.
There isn't a matchmaking system on the planet that can do anything about the extremely low Peak Concurrent User counts this game has suffered from for quite a while. With less than 3000 players online at any time split between 4 Public game modes, up to 4 Factions in Faction Warfare, and the occasional PC match, trying to split that up even further in pursuit of some rose-tinted vision of "fair matches" is just going to leave you waiting 10 minutes every time you want to play Ambush.

What you don't seem to have noticed is that, when it comes to weapons, proto isn't much better than standard on its own. Do you know what makes proto so much better than standard? The skill levels. You have to be level five in a weapon to use proto, meaning that by using proto you are automatically getting all the skill benefits the weapon has to offer. But if you compare the numbers of just the weapons themselves side by side? Proto isn't much better than standard in most cases. Standard can kill proto easily if you have the right SP invesments. The difference isn't great. I'm sure of this because I have damn near only ever used standard weaponry. I have never used proto or officer, and I've rarely used advanced. My old main has six weapons at skill level five, all the bonuses at at least three, and proficiency at two. The edge you get from using proto weapons is from the skill level bonus and your other SP investments.
When it comes to a proto versus proto battle, that becomes a duel of actual player skill. There's no discrepancies between their fits because they've maxed out and they're using the 'best' gear. It's all a matter of who is the better player. Even using the 'OP' weaponry you can get your ass handed to you easily by someone who has actual skill. Standard, though? The victor is usually the one with the SP. Someone with a lot of SP using standard weapons still hits harder, faster, and more accurately than someone with very little. They will deal more damage with their weapon proficiency, be more accurate with their sharpshooter, be able to fire longer with their max ammo increase, reload quicker to get back into the fight, will have less kick, sway, or better cooldown depending on weapon, they will die slower due to their increased armor and shield, their armor plates will give them more HP, their repair modules will rep them more, their myofibs will still be much better than a new player's (+50% efficiency at max level) assuming a new player knows what myofibs are even capable of, and a myriad of so many other things.
Do you know how god damn slow hacking is when you're new? I've been playing a hacker min-scout for about five months now, and when I biomassed to start over I literally gave up on solo hacking. That takes too damn long. But if I had a level five min scout again and had level five proficiency in codebreakers, there wouldn't be any problem at all, even using all standard. Innate min-scout hacking bonus of +20% (that doesn't receive stacking penalty), role proficiency bonus of 25% (no stacking penalty), and module proficiency bonus for the codebreakers themselves, another 25% (I'm honestly not sure if this is another flat increase to innate hack speed or if it increases module efficiency, instead) on top of the actual codebreakers, which, finally, receive stacking penalty.
But that's weaponry and modules. Another problem lies in just how damn useless some standard equipment is, especially if you don't have the appropriate bonuses from SP investments.
Everyone hates standard and militia uplinks. Fifteen whole seconds. By the time you're ready to spawn in, that link will probably have been destroyed or is being camped because of how slow people spawn in, meaning you'll have to spawn somewhere else for possibly another whole fifteen seconds. But a level five Amarr Logi will make that slightly more bearable because of their bonus.
And how about standard repair tools? Aren't those a laugh? Those things are literally go proto or go home. Only one target? And you can't even rep someone through a 1v1 it's so weak? Without the min-logi role bonus the standard rep tool is the shittiest piece of equipment you can possess, next to a standard uplink. But at least the role bonus makes it kind of viable.
Another huge problem with this idea is that vets can choose to go into standard matches and wipe the floor with you. Newbs? That is literally the only option available to them. And you know there are going to be K/DR padding fucktards in the standard matches looking for newbs to kill so they can feel good about themselves. At least in an advanced or proto match everyone is closer to level ground. But the difference between new standard and vet standard is god damn huge.
So, yes, you're right. Standard versus standard matches would make it less easy mode for the vets. But by such a small amount it's entirely negligible. At least in my opinion. |

No, the problem with K/DR matchmaking as I see it is that you'll get relatively skilled players with low K/DR, like logis or scouts, for example, matched with a bunch of people who may not exactly know what they're doing. On the other side of the spectrum, however, you'll have a bunch of gankers, sentinels, tankers, jumpy mass drivers, etc. without any skilled support. The guys who thrive on just obliterating people but don't actually care about the rest of the match. You'll see very few, if any, logis or hackers brought into the match through the matchmaking criteria. The only guaranteed way to have someone who so much as brings an uplink on your team, I'm assuming most people with high K/DR generally run self sufficient fits in case their support dies, is to pull someone from squad finder or your corp. It'd be like the current battles people see so frequently. Only one single person ever putting down an uplink. Except that uplink is a standard or militia because that one person doesn't have any SP invested into uplinks.
Alternatively, it could be just the opposite and K/DR matchmaking could make things absolutely perfect, with sensible, team oriented players achieving the higher tiers and scrubby, angry, hate-mail spewing idiots in the lower. Who knows. |

Veterans can, and will kill you at range with a Sniper Rifle even when you are cloaked. Not if you hold still and wait for people to hack things. I said play like a b*tch not use as intended. And that is OH's pc squad for ya , I love it when a scout stands still and thinks I can't see him I love it when people get cocky and then I drop a 30 bomb on them in PC then they proceed to keep saying that the cloak doesn't work. That's my favorite.
