As well as consoles I also play PC games. Not a galloping shock I know.
I've built a reasonably powerful gaming rig to play Elite: Dangerous with my Rift. I use Voice Attack and Mad Catz FLY 5 with mapped out buttons meaning I don't use a keyboard.
I also play RTS a lot like Starcraft and the Civ series. I can also manage H1Z1. Now I say manage for a reason. Traditional keyboard controls in an FPS on PC is of course WASD. H1Z1 is a slow paced game in PVE so rapid movements of my fingers across WASD are not needed. The PvP part of the game is however a no go area for me. A couple of minutes of rapid movement over WASD leaves my left hand in agony.
It's the main reason that I've always played FPS games on consoles.
Now thankfully, Xbox One controllers now have windows drivers so you can hook it to the PC via a micro USB and your away. Skyrim is an absolute joy to play on PC using one as is Witcher III.
There are however games, namely FPS shooters like the BF series that impossible for me to play on PC using M&KB. And now my rig is powerful enough to pay most of them on Ultra settings.
So I'd like those who have similar conditions tell me how they get around it. I've heard that Gaming Keypads like Razor's Orbweaver as great alternatives.
Thoughts?

A $5 bluetooth dongle and the motion joy drivers will allow you to use your DS3 or DS4 wireless on PC with full custom mapping and even sensitivity adjustments for the sticks. Just had to throw that out there because of you reference to the xbone controller.
As far as your KB/M situation goes I use to have a similar problem and found that it was just that I had not picked out the right keyboard. It is amazing what a slight difference in angle can do for comfort level. Before you start going into alternative devices I recommend just trying a couple of keyboards with adjustable angles and possibly even a wrist support to try to get more comfortable. For people picky like we both seem to be even changing the height on your chair can make a big difference.

It's actually a physical deficiency on my part that causes the problem. The little and ring finger of my left hand have zero dexterous ability other than grip. Only the Middle, Index and Thumb are capable of the rapid and small movements a FPS game needs. It's why a controller is my preferred option. Thumb for analogue stick, middle and index for triggers. M
If I attempt to use the little and ring finger. Agony.
I've tried dozens of keyboards over the years and altered all the ergonomics. No joy.

Your not going to enjoy serious multiplayer PC FPS with a gamepad, you'll just end up getting owned all the time. And as deezy dabeast said, you should try different keyboards, they really make a difference.
As for the pinky and ring finger, you can try this -> http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51yTEA2CuAL.jpg I know it may seem like a troll, but to be honest, it's not a whole lot of money, and having all the fingers trained will also get you some chicks apart from not feeling like having only 3 fingers ;) |

Make sure you use ds3 tool and not the mij interface, avoids a lot of headaches. First setup on mij is a PITA. Would a RTS mouse with buttons do the the trick?

Unfortunately not. Overloading my right hand to do more is likely not the answer.
Has anyone used a gaming keypad then?

You could use the xbcd drivers to get your xbox controller(not sure about xbox 1) to work in any game(even battlefield) and/or use autohotkey to rebind keys(it has some ability to rebind joystick keys but I found it doesn't always work). You'll need to run xbcd install and config as administrator. |

This isnt quite true. While it is true that kb/m has serious advantages, one can usually still compete with a gamepad. I did it for years on older games such as quake and unreal. Any top tier player will beat another top teir player with a kb/m v. gamepad.

Meanwhile im training my slashed up/burned/crushed hands to adapt to keyboard and mouse via team fortress 2. My rig isnt even a rig. I just repaired my friends desktop(ram chip not working, cleaning out the dust) and finnally tweaked a setting and now i can get 60fps(50fps and above as my average) on valve servers wich i have a 50-60 ping. So far im working on playing as the scout.(lots of strafeing(lol dust bunni crutch) fine aim(i have trouble keeping it steady sometimes) and my hands, being the useless hunks of meat and bone that thsy are dont hurt to much anymore. I feel confident enough now in my scout game(the babys face blaster was fun before the bad players got it nerfed) that i invested a few bucks and got myself some strange items(to count my kills, and they happen to be killstreak weapons so i can count my streak) and overall i feel like playing with controllers and keyboards/mouse are both unique in their own way. (I still like keyboard/mouse for typing out messages/fine aim/strafeing. But play controllers when i my hands cant handle all the tendons popping out of place/ plus i started with consoles and controllers)
Need a speedy bro scout? Mail me,comes with shotgun and 20 pound bag of catnip for teh clonocide.(teh fak, cannot spell)

Started off playing competitively on the PC (Half - Life) and America's Army, all with a M/KB. I've recently downloaded Fallout 3 and Fallout New vegas (because PS3 version was FAR buggier) and had to do some relearning with the ol mouse and keyboard.
That said, I don't even know how I did it back in the day. Fallout 3 is of course of much slower pace, but even that is hard to keep up at times with the M/KB. I could only imagine playing Dust with m/kb setup, man how I would suck more than I already do.
All in all though, I was pretty successful with mouse and keyboard at one time, so I think all it really takes is a bit of practice. |
