I'm pretty sure us Eve Online players had the same question for Dust. We once asked ourselves "why is CCP diving into a market where they have no experience in?"
I'm sure probably according to their analysts VR is going be a boom; CCP isn't the only one to invest in it or banking on it becoming a big thing?
VR does not look to be more than a fairly niche market. The average age of gamers is now up to 35 years old. It is safe to assume that a huge portion of that number is people who have kids which mean they can not take the time to put on a helmet and block every one out.
The average attention span has dropped significantly over the past decade or so. This is heavily influenced by mobile devices that do more and growth in the internet. What part of this drop indicates people are going to all of a sudden spend hundreds of dollars to shut them self off from that?
What it boils down to is VR stands to be strong within a niche market of gamers but does not show signs of either sustainable growth over a long period and certainly does not show signs of being able to support an entire company thanks to everyone competing over a certain niche who will certainly demand the highest levels of quality making them tough to truly monetize.
If you don't believe me just take a look at how well 3d televisions were adopted. We saw a great spike from earlier adopters followed by no sustainability because the average consumer had no desire to wear even a pair of glasses. This slow to no adoption lead to film makers being unwilling to spend the extra money to film in 3d which killed off adoption rates even more.
One could argue that CCP is simple attempting to take advantage of the initial boom because of the number of VR projects they are working on at once and if they were right I would have to give huge props to CCP. The only issue there is that by all accounts from the outside there is quite a bit of neglect going on to make these VR projects happen.
