I got killed by nova knives from about 10 feet away. Kill screen said 3 meters. Do these mercenaries have giant spider crab like arms? |

The distance is how far your enemy was at the time of your death, but sometimes it can take a second to register. I'm not sure if its a register thing or perhaps the ever so smallest bit of lag interfering.
Either way I've been killed out of range by other weapons

3 meters is about 10 feet. Seems legit.

Nova knives have like 2.5m range, and the guy could have stepped away as you fell.

This game has bugs and isn't always accurate, so yeah who knows. Kind of like dying to flux grenades.

Since knife range is 2.5 m as has been said, and there is no accuracy with regards to kill distance in the death screen, they probably just round.
