If the future holds a Logistics Dropship in store for us, it shouldn't be given to us without some serious SP grinding (and some added SP grinding for those players who are currently enjoying ADS, so they have some new SP progression to add to their lives too).
Every module or "turret unit", or "equipment" added to the progression of Dropships should add an entire new pathway to the Skill Tree. (Like the nanohive has its own skill branch, and the codebreaker, and so on.)
But each module should also be EXCLUSIVE to the Logi-class DS, and not functional (or fittable on ADS or even standard dropships). They should also be modules that have limited use on a Lav, and NO way to fit on a HAV.
(Likewise, any "turret-unit" style module that affects the destructiveness of the weapons of the vehicle, should be EXCLUSIVE to ADS, have limited use on an HAV, and NO way to fit on a Lav.)
Examples:
"Radiant-pulse Nanite Module" - exists as "equipment" that can only be fitted in the special equipment-slot provided on a Logi DS (or an advanced model Lav). This turns the DS into a travelling Nanohive, re-supplying infantry who stands within range. Adv or Proto variants of the module can offer increased proximity-range.
"Scanner Modulation Unit" - exists as "equipment" so it only fits on a Logi DS (or certain adv Lavs). This unit adds 20% DB improvement to any High-slot Scanner module you fit on the vehicle. This would effectively enable a Logi DS (Logi-Lav?) to be the ONLY way to detect deeply dampened (or cloaked?) Scout mercs in the game.
Re-instated "Onboard CRU" - fully public, and accessible to ANYONE on the team. This is a useful way to help rescue redlined troops in some unfortunate matches.
"Captain's Chair Module" - exists as "equipment" that enables a removed door turret to become a 5th or 6th passenger seat. This enables the Logi-DS to be the largest troop carrier in the game.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

One of the main problems dropships face is that the maps are just too small for them to function the way they're supposed to.
A dropship by definition should deploy/extract troops to and from different battlefields; they don't really have a reason to be hopping around the same battlefield.
With the exception of getting high ground, it's usually more convenient for infantry to just proceed on foot, or use a ground vehicle.

I don't think the captain's chair module would be necessary. Leaving the turret slots empty would be enough to make them passenger seats.

The pickup and dropoff role really barely exists at all in Dust. There are a few maps where at certain times a DS can be useful for this, but mostly this isn't the case. A Scout with an uplink generally does a better job at proving mobility after the first 2 minutes of the match have passed.
However, the mobile support fire DS and ADS can (somewhat effectively) provide have a genuine place on the field. Both aren't perfectly designed for this, but it is possible and - I believe - worthwhile.
DS-based Logistics is something I'm not quite sure about right now. I have trouble imagining a Logi DS that is effective at infantry support without substituting an infantry logi. Vehicle support seems to be a niche that isn't occupied yet, but it's tough to think of mechanics that make it worth for more than 30 seconds every couple of minutes.
I could imagine a logistics DS being able to armor-repair, shield-harden or ammo-resupply an HAV, but given the low number of HAVs generally deployed, is that really a role that needs to exist? |
