We need to change the Loyalty Ranking system. In principal it's a great idea, but we're doing it all wrong.
The best Ranking system I've seen in an online shooter is Halo 3, and I feel we should draw some inspiration from their system.
My main complaints about the Loyalty Ranks are:
1.) It is mostly seems to represent the amount of Aurum a player has purchased.
2.) The title 'Loyalty Rank' misleads some players into thinking this has something to do with Faction Standings, likely due to FW rewarding Loyalty Points
3.) It is not dynamic: You steadily build your ranking (mostly through purchasing Aurum) over time. This stat reflects time played, Aurum purchased, and not much else. Over a great enough time period, all players will reach the maximum rank.
What I would like to see changed:
- Your rank should be performance based, and a rank should be maintained. Perform well and your rank will increase, perform poorly and your rank will decrease.
- Rename Loyalty Rank to Battle Rank (working title, feel free to suggest something better). New players will now not confuse this with Faction Standings.
- Use this as a factor in Matchmaking. IE: Attempt to average the total rank of the two teams.
- Remove Aurum as a factor

I think the increasing and decreasing based on performace aspect of your proposal goes against the concept of the thing. It is supposed to be a lifetime stat showing a level of accomplishment and amount of work put in. I dont see any reason why an additional, dynamic stat like the one you are proposing couldnt or shouldnt be implemented alongside an improved version of the loyalty rank, though.

I'd also prefer to see more ranks that are closer together. I think the amount of time/money needed to rank up is so large that it doesn't really feel like something I'm working towards...instead it just feels like an eventuality, and that isn't that fun.
Perhaps make each current rank be 3-5 ranks, with the 'XP' required to rank up divided up appropriately? I think that would make the system more interesting and approachable, because lets face it, we all love it when we level up.

I think that would make the system more interesting and approachable, because lets face it, we all love it when we level up. I feel similarly about the loyalty ranks. The geological pace at which it moves tells me that I'm *not* making progress and any progress I may have achieved is largely due to me buying progress with money. Overall I try to avoid looking at my loyalty rank. Either I feel it is too low and I'm reminded that I have to spend money to improve it or I feel it is too high when I wonder why exactly I spent so much money on digital stuff.
At this point I don't see any reason why the loyalty rank system exists in it's current form. I'd much prefer a performance based system. Maybe one that doesn't have 'down-leveling'. In that case the number displayed to the user is the best performance metric achieved so far, even if the current one is worse right now. The actual current metric is used for matchmaking while the visible number is just for bragging rights. Something like that... |

+1.
I've disliked the current incarnation of the loyalty rank system for a long time, and I would very much like to see it changed. Your assertion that it is primarily affected by AUR is something I definitely agree with.
I completely agree that it should be more based on the amount of time actually played rather than AUR purchased - however, I don't think it should decrease. IMHO, it should act as a lifetime benchmark for a character rather than either an indicator of how much AUR the player has purchased or as an indicator of the current level of performance of the player. There are other metrics for current performance - mu rating, monthly/weekly stats, etc. Progressing LR should be something that players can legitimately work towards steadily, though.

But how is CCP going to get average Jow to buy Aurum if there is no incentive? Loyalty rank has been and likely always will be something of a money grab. They know the only reasonable way to level up without grinding is aurum. I am sure you realized once they added in the aurum points, they even changes the description. It used to say "buying and using Aurum." They changed it strictly to "buying Aurum" because they are not going to give anyone a bump towards a goal that hurts their ability to make money.

People purchase Aurum to buy in game items such as boosters, SKINS, and assets. Loyalty is just a side effect that happens to come with those things.
Nobody spends money for the purpose of increasing standing.

Except for the trading unlock, yeah. The bonuses from LR are too minor to want to buy them specifically.

I would suggest it being renamed Mercenary Rank, generic enough to relate to.
And as for AUR,remove it from the new "mercenary rank" to a monthly milestone rewards system for buying AUR.
Milestone 1:Purchase X AUR,get a free 1 day booster. For example.
Milestones reset each month. Now you get a little something extra for buying AUR,and your rank reflects your dedication instead of your wallet.
Milestones would also potentially pave the way for optional subscriptions to become available.(later on)

I've been a firm supporter of the idea that LR have more factors for earning it since, well honestly since prior to it's release into the game. Dust currently lacks an Achievement/medal/ribbon/trophy system in game and I think it could use one. Not only would it be an amusing way to track in game activities and have some mild goals to work for while playing just like PSN trophies offer but earning the Dust trophies could grant experience toward further LR.
Adding more methods for activity to contribute to gains in LR is something I'm very supportive of and hope we see in future.

We do need a reworking of it. Maybe some free AUR once in a while as a thx for blowing all this cash or some goodies as you get higher in rank. Like get to rank 5 and get a Quafe weapon of your choice.

This.
Good idea op but it feels like something a little different to what the idea of the loyalty ranks are.
