Normally when I bust out a DS it's to get my merc into an advantageous elevated position or to set up some uplinks. As of late I have been flying it over the objective finding a good place to set down that gives a nice view from the gunner seat, then I let loose with a rail gun. This has been very fun as of late and with good results. So after doing this for a few matches I now have some questions also any tips or storys about your own personal experiences would be appreciated.
I understand that the driver's ammo, reload, and proficiency skills stack with the gunners skills but what about drop ship skills like assault, cal/gal assault? Also does the assault skills only work on a python/incubus? If I set down at a strategic spot and switch to the gunner position so there is no pilot and start raining hell upon my enemies what kinda bonuses can I get from my drop ship? Finally, if I activate any modules will they stay on for there full cycle before shutting off and will I still get the bonuses from them as the gunner? |

You are becoming very clever, Private. Most players in Dust (GǪmost?, I don't know for sure) do not get into strategic thinking like that. Good for you!
As I understand it, bonuses you get for skills you build toward you vehicle, can only benefit your vehicle ONCE. You are the owner/operator of the Dropship (or Lav, etc), so you bring bonuses to it once, regardless of if you change seats, or even stand outside the dropship immediately after activating a module.
I've switched seats after activating hardeners, and been blinded by my own hardener glow while at the turrets. You can't turn the glow off until you swap back into the driver's spot. I've stepped off my DS, even in midair, while the module was activated, and watched my "mod-glowing" vehicle "glow on" without me in it.
If I skill my small turrets to a new level, I can get on my own turrets and enjoy that bonus (faster rotation, increased default ammo, quicker reload), but it's the same "ONCE" benefit.
Someone else can hop in your Dropship and temporarily bring his/her own turret bonuses to your vehicle as you drive it, and that's the only way your vehicle can benefit TWICE. Even if he has been skilling in DS longer than you, and has high module-active duration bonuses, or cooldown-cycle bonuses, his bonus skills will NOT stack onto your driver bonuses.
Same with "speed" related bonuses. He may have skilled his clone brain to completely counteract the speed penalty of having heavy armour plates on a vehicle. But climbing into YOUR vehicle won't suddenly make your DS move faster. Riding in a passenger seat won't add his skills to your bonus---his added bonus will only apply to the turret he operates. (So your Python chin turret won't benefit from having him onboard. The chin turret only benefits from the operator's bonuses--and benefits ONCE).
Any holes in my observations, will have to be filled by an ADS player. I don't know the full list of assault bonuses that you get to skill into.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

a) Well Done. Fighting as a Gunner without a pilot shows commitment to the Craft. When the Gunner is committed he needs no pilot; only targets.
b) . Despite the fun factor the solo gunner approach is not recommended and highly situational this is due to The Meta, mechanics and general OPGÇÖness of AV, officer AV, minmatar, commandos. Therfore, The Gunner/Symbiote is better off with a host/slave/ GÇ£dedicatedGÇ¥ pilot. YouGÇÖll find the teamwork/synergy to be more far more fun and fulfilling. At least you wont be dying alone!
c) Challenge the Meta? Le sigh... If you really want to go solo. then fly cheap. try to avoid using hardeners. hope your vehicle skills and piloting are top notch...good luck with that.
d) Skills: a recap as you know it. simplified. Pilot/Gunner small turret skills stack. reload, ammo, proficiency (rotation speeeeeeeeed) stack. Applies to any Vehicle. LAV,Tank,DS,ADS ADS Only : Cal(fire rate,ammo)/Gal (firerate, heat buildup, ammo) and the General ADS(dmg) skill stacks.
e) Skill Stacking Direction: PIlot ----->Gunner ; a solo gunner will only have own skills to utilize. That should also answer your last question
f) The smartest thing you've done is ask for help. If you would like more insight into the *Darkside* i mean Gunning please dont hesitate to read my guide on the subject. The ADS Gunner's Primer: The Gospel of Destruction: (Delta ) Abridged

In truth, I'm not a good shot....I'm just really, really lucky!
