It is apparent that laser turrets will be made available, but how thay will work remains to be seen. I have a few ideas on the subject which are as follows:
1) No splash damage. This much is obvious given the nature of the weapon.
2) Continous stream. The laser itself should continue to be emitted until the turret overheats, this mixed with a balanced tracking speed makes the turret more accurate than a blaster with longer range, but less damage output.
3) beam effect. Should be a beam laser. Probably using the same colour as mulitfreuquency crystals from EVE, there should only be sound heard from where the beam hits (a burning/melting sound) and from the turret (all of the generators etc.)
4) other effects. Burn marks on the ground would be cool, as well as giving players a heads up of what could be around the corner.
Feel free to add ideas, or suggest better ideas

Due to mechanics concerning EVE laser ammo, i expect a "charge" system will be first tested on laser weapons if planned so, which means keep an eye open. 1. Agreed. Can't have another swarm launcher here. 2. Laser rifles (descriptions already in PS-Home space, talk to recruiter) will be beams, so this will be true with beam turrets. Unsure about pulses. 3. See my charge system comments. Also, the recent EVE trailer (apparently summing up Templar One) shows green beams in the battle segment, and i don't remember which crystal in EVE is green. 4. would like other effects... AFTER bug-squashing to make it playable. As for heads-up, the glowing beam of death probably gave it away already.

Never really thought of being able to change crystal but it would enhance game-play tremendously if implemented correctly. your mention of EVE reminded me of another balancing mechanic and feature, capacitor. Once implemented energy neutralizers would be a great way to counter laser turrets, as long as everything is done in a balanced fashion it could make for some pretty interesting matches. |

Well green is T2 Conflagaration and I am guessing we are gona see epic damage over shields and much less so over armor but who knows. |

X-ray is the green laser crystal.
Conflaguration is indeed the T2 variant.
I'm all for changing crystal damage types, assuming they have a range finder on the scope, otherwise how am I supposed to know I need Radio or Multifrequency? :) |

Lasers! what fun: Visible light lasers will go straight through shields (otherwise the shields would be opaque), and hit the armour directly! But then again you'd just need polished and buffed shiny armour to be impervious to lasers (or bounce the laser beam back to the turret!) The laser could have a really really glaringly blindingly bright spot where it lands, making it hard for anybody to see if they aren't facing away - only the turret gunner won't be affected because presumably he's wearing the right wavelength sunglasses.
Microwave lasers will be invisible and will cook flesh, but are stopped by a thin metal grille or sheet, which I'd imagine every armour would have. It might disrupt shields however, but invisible beams are no fun (huh? why is my shield depleted?)
Gamma-Ray lasers I know even less about I'd imagine the beam to be invisible, to go straight through shields and any armour that isn't a half-ton of lead, and vapourize the clone in no time at all, leaving nothing but an empty smoking shell lying on the ground...
Are there Lasers in EVE? Perhaps the Dust Lasers will be modelled on them - unless the EVE Lasers don't work in Dust because all the dust in the air disperses the laser beam? |

Eve lasers come in 2 flavours beam and pulse. I think beam is long range and each shot lasts about a second, pulse are short range and the shot is esentially a series of rapid pulses.
Each weapon can load in a variety of crystals that vary the base range and damage of the weapon. So double range/half damge or half range/double damage (not true figures)
Based from this a laser rifle in Dust could be the same beam or pulse. Beam wepons could then reproduce the abilities of snipers/assualt rifles and pulse weapons reproduce the abilities of machine guns/shot guns/forge guns.
If they arent the prettiest thing in Dust when released I shall have to write a very stern letter indeed. I am hoping that their release will be a while which means the devs are working to make them 'just right' |
