Protostomping in pubs is a hot topic on these forums. Players with low isk or SP find it unfair and frustrating, players who have worked for it want to be able to use their toys. In theory the isk payout per match keeps it in check, but that's a small comfort for people who are on the receiving end.
Statistics are what we use to measure our success in a match. Most of us primarily want to win, but also we want to win hard. We measure that using the statistics available, namely KDR and WP. When you're up against protosuits, both of these tend to be in short supply. Players have nothing else to work towards, so they'll switch to cheap suits or just leave.
But what if you still had something to work towards, something that mattered: the amount of isk you've killed.
I'm not advocating opening these stats up too much. I would argue against including any stats that are not "fun" to see, or anything that places too much extra strain on the PS3. With that in mind I propose one or more of the following:
- Total value of all suits you killed
- Number of suits killed above a certain value e.g. 99k, 300LP, anything officer
- Total isk or number of high value suits killed by each team
- An indication of the death of a high value clone (sound, +1WP, graphic on kill ticker)
This would give players a reason to continue to fight in at least moderately priced suits in spite of assured defeat, which would raise the overall quality of games. It would give skilled players a reason to seek out and kill players who run those expensive suits, without overtly punishing players who wish to use them. I might be overstating the effect it would have, but in my experience killing an expensive suit is one of the more satisfying things you can do.
Pros: - More stats are fun - Something to work for even when you're losing - Doesn't affect balance
Cons: - Could be even more disappointing if you don't get anything when you're stomped - Changes player incentives, potentially away from targets of high strategic value - Availability of targets can vary wildly
TL;DR Record high value kills so that you have something to win at when outclassed |

This way, going up against proto stompers becomes more an opportunity and less of a headache. Isk Efficiency stat would be cool, but getting paid would be cooler, right?
I feel like that would encourage protosuits, partly due to upping the payout for pubs. I specifically avoided isk payouts because it's not as visually rewarding and it involves messing with pub payout balance. A ticker icon, sound effect, (modest) WP bonus, or kb stat is acknowledgement of your more significant contribution to the team, isk payouts are kind of bland. |

If I have a positive ratio, I am killing more than I am losing and am probably helping the team. If I am running a negative, it lets me know I need to look at fits/tactics etc. or maybe just run cheaper stuff.
That doesn't really accomplish the goal of recognition for protokills without altering anything else. Showing your ismkratio, especially when it can vary wildly between matches, only really tells you to run to run the cheapest fits possible. I don't want to discourage protosuits, only promote countering them when they appear
Besides your isk efficiency matters only in relation to the match payout |
