 What IGÇÖm suggesting is to create/remake the weapon variant on 4 rifles. The aim would be to have 3 variant for each weapons that are adapted to gameplay based on distance. The major thing about it would be to add to each weapon a mechanic similar to the laser rifle. Over or under a certain range, the weapon become useless. The end objective would be to make every rifle able to deal with every kind of range while promoting each race basical doctrine.
 
 IGÇÖll take Caldari as an exemple, their main way to do is to use long range weapons. So the idea would be to make their long range rifle the best long range weapon. On the other side, their short range variant is to be less efficient than the Plasma rifle as plasma is the main way to go to deal with. But less efficient donGÇÖt mean itGÇÖs not as deadlyGǪ
 
 This is a raw proposition with barely any numbers (the distances need adjustments), itGÇÖs just to give an idea and see what the community/devs think about it.
 
 Plasma Rifle
 Standard variant (short) 0-20 meters
 Incursion variant (middle) 15-30 meters
 Tactic variant (long) 30-55 meters
 
 Rail Rifle
 Assault variant (short) 5-25 meters
 Incursion variant (middle) 20-45 meters
 Standard variant (long) 45-85 meters
 
 Projectile Rifle
 Assault variant (short) 0-20 meters
 Standard variant (middle) 20-40 meters
 Tactic variant (long) 40-65 meters
 
 Scrambler Rifle
 Assault variant (short) 5-25 meters
 Salvo variant (middle) 25-50 meters
 Standard variant (middle) 45-80 meters

 (Short answer, I know this is just a raw proposition, but those number's? No, this game need's proper scientifical range's, if an M4 Carbine can hit 300+ meter's then the combat rifle should do the same, and the rail rifle double of that, Plasma weapon's shouldn't/wouldn't be terribly ranged they'd more than likely fall 100 meter's short and laser? Probably in between plasma and projectile. Personal Opinion Stated ).

 Gameplay > Realism. Not smart to compare dust to real life.
 
 Sci-fi ground battles are really anachronistic to be honest. Future wars will not be fought like WW2 with lasers.
 
 Realistic weapon ranges (not to mention what future combat tech would really function like) would make gameplay impossible.

 I think the better solition is to remove pre-made variants altogether.
 
 Instead, every merc should start with the base model of a particular weapon, and customize it from there. The result would be a player more-or-less turning the weapons into the variant they want.

 If I want to play a FPS and kill anyone at any range, I'll go on battlefield. However, like the devs mentionned not that long ago Dust is supposed to be a TACTICAL shooter. Except that there is nothing tactical with some of the rifles able to hit at full damage from 0 to 80 meters.
 
 Aside, if you want Dust to be realistic, you can also make some proposition about how LAVs reacts on bumps and ditches
