My PS3 is like 6 or 7 years old and runs like a champ. Of course mine has about 3 feet of clearance on all sides, and sits about 3 feet off the ground, away from the carpet, and not jammed into an entertainment center. I clean it out fairly regularly as well.

Back when I was playing Dust for 3-6 hours every night I set up a fan to keep airflow on it and blow the heat away. Dust is still the only game that has tripped the secondary fan in my system. When that thing kicks on it sounds like my PS3 is going to launch itself into orbit.

Not sure what PS3 model you have, and I'm not sure which one I have. I have one of the early models, but not the one that is backwards compatible with PS2 games. My main fan will kick on sometimes with other games, obviously the longer I play on my PS3 the more likely the fan will kick on. When I crank up Dust the primary fan usually kicks on immediately, pretty much always within 5 to 10 minutes, whether I'm actually in match or not. Then 30 to 45 minutes into playing, that secondary fan kicks in. If you have seen the Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode where Frylock builds the sphere shaped super computer that powers up and launches itself into the past, that's what I'm expecting my PS3 to do when that secondary fan kicks in. If your PS3 only has one fan I'm sure it's normal for it to be loud. I'd imagine it's a bit more powerful to compensate for the fact it only has one fan. The best thing to do is to keep your PS3 as far away from anything as is possible/reasonable. Give it plenty of room to breathe, and a box fan or something like that can only help, though that's possibly a little extreme (unless you are playing Dust). Also, I if you have a Plasma TV (which I do), most definitely keep any gaming console far far far away from the TV. Plasmas (at least the older ones) get insanely hot, and mine over the course of a year actually fried the little SD card and dock/connector thingy that came with it

I know I get into battle first and I know I have sat and listened to the whole team ***** about lag when myself and the one other person in match with SSD have none at all. My theory is that not only does it produce much faster turn around times for data that is pulled from the disk but that it also reduces the overall operating temperature inside the ps3 allowing the gpu and cpu to run a little smoother. I am no hardware engineer so there is no real evidence behind that other than the temperature differences that I have seen on the drives in my PC. Remove NPC orbitals from FW. -- Fix orbital timers for Eve players assisting in Planetary Conquest.
