Would it be possible or even feasible to have a persistent game mode that allows for a large scale battle over the course of a whole day? I realise player numbers are on the low side but it's something I hoped dust would already have by now.
So the initial idea I have is 32 a side or upwards (lag dependant) with the ability to call down railgun and blaster batteries to the places where they can actually be a useful asset instead of the ridiculous placements some of them have on current maps, deep in the redline where they won't ever see a red dot/triangle/diamond. Having a frontline with a tactical use of hardware just seems more realistic. You wouldn't have artillery out of range of the things they were supposed to be shooting at.
So no clone limit, join and leave as you please, day long battles (or maybe shorter), more players in battle and player placeable hardware (at an isk cost).
It's a concept not a fully fleshed out idea. What would you like to see?

I like where your heads at. 16v16 just won't cut it forever.
Take a look at the link in my signature .
I've got some ideas for some larger scale stuff as well. Let me know what you think of that.

Yes yes yes. The game currently feels a bit cookie cutter when it should feel like a totally original game. It needs to be bigger. It needs to take influence from real world war. 10-20 min skirmish is great if you want a quick blast but if a player wants a bit more immersion it should feel more realistic.
I like the idea of 128 v 128 but have no clue how feasible it is. Bigger maps yes definitely. The thing I find most bugs me is that Eve is a galaxy sized entity and each system is vast yet dust is played on enclosed maps. I'd love to be able to explore. Switch systems and land on planets/moons/asteroids and mine as you can in Eve albeit on a much smaller scale.
Yes I'm dreaming now but wouldn't it be cool to open this game up to the extent that eve is? Different careers other than just meat shields. Yes I was a carebear in eve, well until I got bored and roamed around killing stray pilots. No I don't want dust to be eve.....well maybe a little.

Theoretically, yes it's possible to have large scale battle's, MAG did it once, hell I dare say we could probably do it after the tiercide update, maybe even make improvement's to current map's instead of adding new one's, allowing more area to be covered/traversed.

So basically, this is how I would see this working. Let me know if I'm on track or not.
I am going to guess it would likely be an extended ambush match. However, if we want to make it a Dom or Skirm, I guess it would work that for every MCC your team destroys, you get a bonus of WP or something to that effect and after every MCC explosion, All null cannons are reset.
There are also no squads due to the way it will work overall with people leaving coming. We don't want one squad of Nyain San to stay in and stomp people the whole day. Or, auto-filling squads but no Warbarges.
1. At the beginning of the day, the first 32 (using 16 v 16 just as an example, totally spitballing here) people who sign up are randomly placed into this match.
2. The next people who queue up are placed on a waitlist. If 32 players get built up onto the waitlist, a second match is started.
3. As a player leaves, the first person on the waitlist replaces that merc. Every player that leaves will be replaced by the next person on the waitlist.
4. If at any point in time, one team has 50% more total WP than the other team, the teams will shift in the middle of battle to keep teams even ( a blue may become a red and vice versa).
5. If the time comes where there are no more players in queue, as players leave teams will shift in the middle of battle to ensure even numbers on each side (see #4)
5. If the number of mercs in this gamemode drops below 32 (again, spitballing), there will be a 30 second "pause" to bring the two seperate battles together into one battle.
Is that kind of what you are talking about? If that is the case, I like the idea and think it would be a great break. Here are the questions I would pose:
How would ISK/SP payouts work? Is it going to be strictly based on WP, or are any other metrics going to be in play? If I am willing (crazy?) enough to bust out my Logi and sit in the same battle for 3 hours farming 75,000 WP, am I going to be paid "x" ISK and SP per WP? We can't really pay for time in battlle, or, if we did, it would have to be very little. Let's say for arguments sake the payout is 1000 ISK per WP and .5 SP per WP. At those numbers, for 3 hours of work and 75,000 WP, I made 7.5 Million ISK and 37500 SP. Again, the numbers are spitballed just for an idea. This seems a bit low for 3 hours of work on the ISK side.

if that's what you want go play planet side?
trust me it's not the same and it probably won't be as fun as it sounds, also in dust having to implement ways to leave match without physically quitting ( you'd get no rewards ) would be a design challenge that would take a long time and would bring even more problems that would need to be ironed out
however large scale battles may not be too far off and could possibly happen but don't get your hopes up

Umm, does PS have a skill system like DUST? Can I skill point's into a sniper rifle and have an SMG at the same time? Can I skill into the shield's to make them better or not suck?

Lol, anyway yes, it IS theoretically possible for DUST to have large open game's, but there's a lot of resource's being used at the moment that prevent said theoretical possibility from happening.
