For you personally. Ranking by how much you enjoyed each game at the time you first played it. You can pick an entire franchise as one entry if you please.
I'll go first. Not in any particular order.
1.) Thief: The Dark Project. One of the pioneers of the stealth genre.
2.) Quest for Glory series. Old old school point and click adventure RPG from the 90's. Played them when I was in elementary school. Was super impressed that you could import your character into the next game via floppy disk. The future is now!
3.) Morrowind. The freedom and openness blew my mind. One of the first games I played on the original Xbox. Got this game for PC as soon as I learned what modding was. Ending up joining a community mod project called "Tamriel Rebuilt" and submitted some work for them. Mostly building interiors.
With mods installed, this game still holds up to any modern RPG.
4.) Mass Effect (Series): Debated giving this to KOTOR. Both amazing. Mass effect is a masterpiece. It has a controversial ending, but there's no way I'm going to let the final 10 minutes detract from the countless hours of awesome this game gives you.
If you are at all a fan of the sci fi adventure genre, play these games.
5.) Halo:Combat evolved. To me, the shooter that leaped the farthest ahead of its competition. The only shooter to get vehicles (specifically ground vehicles) perfectly right. Bungie nailed it. Could go on and on listing all the things they did right.
Used to system link Halo 2 at friends ' houses, dreaming of big online battles ((had dial-up Internet ).
Played Halo 3 online quite a bit and was ranked decently. Made an awesome map for Halo 4 in the Forge Editor, tried to submit it for rotation, never heard back. Now I'm bitter and will never buy another Halo game. The series has gotten carried away anyways.
Honorable mentions.
- X-Wing vs. Tie fighter: Awesome space fighter game. Tons of depth for a game from that time. I'm hoping Valjyrie draws lots of inspiration from this game.
- Kotor. Great Star Wars RPG. Prelude to Mass Effect in terms of game play. And a story that surpasses the movies in my opinion.
-Mech Warrior: Old PC game. Tons of depth for a 90's game. Almost every button on your keyboard did something. It felt like driving a mech.
Was super disappointed when 'Mechassault' came out on original xbox. It had none of that, just very basic 3PS generic action game. Probably the first time I became aware of the 'dumbing down syndrome' in gaming..
- Jedi Knight series: The way you progressed from a forceless scrub with a blaster all the way to a powerful Jedi master was awesome. And by the time you were good at your force powers you actually felt like a Jedi master. It was awesome.
I remember thinking how lame it was when "Force unleashed" came out. So you just start out as the immediate most all powerful Jedi of all time? Complete cop out. Not rewarding at all.
- SOCOM. This and NHL 2004 were the only online games I was able to play on my dial-up connection on my PS2.
Great multi-player. The single life per round made it so intense. The push to talk comms felt extremely tactical at the time. First competitive online shooter I played.
Let's gear yours!

Akamandon wrote:All time favorite game would have to be Morrowind, spent hundreds of hours on that game especially the game of the year edition with mournhold and soltsteim. Oblivion and skyrim were great too. 2nd favorite would probably be the first fallout game and then I enjoyed the second and third one, never played the new Vegas one. 3rd & 4th would probably be goldeneye and perfect dark, just spent so many hours playing that with my friends and lastly have to give a shout out to oregon trails just cause it was the first game I ever played.
Highly recommend checking out the Tamriel Rebuilt project for Morrowind. If you're not already aware of it.
