I'm not sure if this has been proposed before, so I apologize to whoever's idea I'm probably stealing.
Did a quick search and couldn't quite find exactly this.
Basically, we could combine weapon customization with something similar to the power core idea. We could get two birds stoned at once by adding customization and eliminating tons of assets.
Basically, you start with a basic gun variant (which will be the only variant)
From there you choose things to add to your gun. The more you improve your gun the more CPU/PG it will cost.
Most modules will be an either/or choice. IE: Increase damage > reduce fire rate. Choosing maximum damage for example would give you min fire rate, and basically give you a TAC AR. From there you could add optional attachments, such a scope
Potential attachments:
Scopes Larger clips Heat sinks Barrels with different dispersion etc
A 'weapon power core' would give the gun an all-round dmg multiplier equivalent to the difference between BSC ADV PRO tiers.

change the name from power core to some type of ammo and id be cool with it.

Like say Phased Plasma for CRs, EMP for CRs, Lead for CRs, Hail, Barrage for CRs, offering a wide range of different damage profiles based on Eve assets in place already and easy enough to maybe carry an extra clip of each so you can adjust your damage profile on the fly as you find different enemies to engage.

Totally makes sense. Though I will be the party pooper and say that adding a weapon customization system is significantly more work on the back-end compared to the Dropsuits, since currently there is really NO customization, whereas with a Dropsuit you kinda have the framework in place.
So would it be a good thing? Totally. But I wouldn't expect it for some time, as there are some lower hanging fruit to grab first.
