So I hear this statement a lot, "Gunnlogis are meant for ranged battle while Maddies are front line brawlers". This same statement translates to suits, and what I'm about to say goes for both of them. Though the disparity is more obvious in tanks due to the fact that they cannon easily (if at all) dual tank anymore.
It has ALWAYS confused me as to why people think shields are supposed to stay at range, and if you have trouble with them it's because you didn't follow that mantra. This would make perfect sense if they had bonuses to ranged combat of some sort in addition to weaker defenses.
Yet they do not.
A maddie can fit for high defensive power, while augmenting their attack, utilizing their non defense related high slots.
A gunnlogi on the other hand must choose to either augment their attack prowess through utilization of their high slots, or their defensive abilities.
For shields, it's one or the other. Armor on the other hand can easily do both.
Let's just compare a fit that uses a railgun as their main weapon.
Maddie build
High - Nitro, damage mod, heatsink
Lows - Plate, 2x hardener, repper
Compared to:
Gunnlogi build
High - 2x hardener, 2x extender, heatsink
Lows - regulator, CPU mod
The disparity should be obvious. While you can argue that shield tanks are meant for range, you will notice that an armor tank is actually superior in that regard, when fit for range.
This is one of the main reasons the armor tank has been superior (aside from the previous build when shield tanks could duel tank and maddies were over nerfed).
This same principle translates to shield suits and armor suits, though is less noticeable as many shield suits can duel tank, though they are still weaker in comparison to their armor counterparts as they gain no armor based benefits from it. This I think is the number one reason for the disparity between the two classes.

Aye.
But I did find that gunnlogis are pretty good with missiles: they're more mobile, so they can roll in, unload, and roll out.

Yeah, I spec'ed out of missiles a long while back, yet I still think that a maddie can more effectively use them considering they have an easier time augmenting their damage output with them.
Though considering shields take considerably less from missiles, I generally pull a gunnie with a rail against a missile maddie. I suspect against another missile a gunnie holds an advantage, but anything else, like a rail or blaster, they stand more on even ground.
I do miss that mobility, yet they are too weak to justify using a gunnie in anything but the most extreme or limited situations. All in all, a maddie works better all around.
