I remember a while back spewing some filth across the forums saying that there was a Crystal in EVE that did explosive damage...
Can we just make that canon now? -20 shield +20 armor laser crystal?
GJR, let's just say that the dirt composition is highly susceptible to explosion by a specific frequency of crystal, and that incidentally it is also found inside of the materials used to make their structures.

Focus points. Lasers are like how you roast ants with a magnifying glass.
You have to focus it just so. Move too far forward or back and the light no longer kills.
WoW has taught me that Purple means Legendary. This means Quafe suits are the optimal loadout for killing all of you.

Pretty much. Had a huge segment in my high school physics class about optics...I know more about focus points than I care to. I think the flavor text even talks about this.

Personally, I like it how it is now.
There isn't really anything wrong with it. When used correctly, it absolutely melts everything. I like how it rewards accuracy. Most of it's drawbacks are heavily outweighed by it's benefits.

Anyway, I'm bored at work. Just wanted to see people freak out about splash damage lasers.
Although I really would love a variant of the Laser Rifle that acts like a Sniper Rifle with really good range and requires you to stay on target, but has much more of a close range damage drop-off.
Like, optimal 100 - 300 and a scope.
That'd be baller.

Crazy Laser Rifle ideas
Aeon's idea, but you hold the beam on an area to 'heat' it (no damage) and when you release the beam, it explodes giving AOE damage. Damage is based on length of time 'heated'
Laser rifle beam reflects against none dropsuit/vehicle surfaces, create a deadly lattice through that corridor
as above, but reflects against anything under 15m before reverting to normal function
Weapon does no damage but put stun locks and enemy in place (powers down suit movement), takes up equipment slot
Reverse flow, use to boost allies shields (% of current damage)
Dual Usage, hold down the melee button to activate short range mode, cone shaped short range blasts (10-15m)
Can you tell i should be working on a project right now...

Splash damage is essentially AOE. You know that bright thingamabob in the sky? It also emits radiation that affects a large area.
Electromagnetic radiation ain't nothing to scoff at. Science-fictionally speaking: no matter what specific part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum your laser is in, you would probably have splash.
A laser in the optical spectrum, when pointed at an object, will throw light (AKA radiation) to that object. Thing is, that light will not simply disappear. Depending on the composition of the object and the intensity of the laser, you may get varying degrees of scatter that throws the radiation outward, creating an "area of effect" around the point of laser impact.
Not all radiation is as benign as optical light. Microwaves, UV rays, X-rays, Infrared, and Gamma rays can be quite damaging. I don't know what the lore is behind DUSTs lasers is, but lasers may very have AOE or "splash" radiation. Whether or not that scattered radiation is enough to damage you is up for debate.
That is not to mention any sort of affects the laser may have on the atmosphere, potentially creating an AOE along the laser beam.
