There's a few of us yet dedicated to it and won't change but some threads have popped up comparing us to assault suits and you really can't.
A commando is slow and a big target and has between 2 and 4 slots for fitting. Your competition is likely better fitted because they have more slots, faster unless its another heavy and since the re-spec we're seeing more proto fits and APEX suits.
I've experimented with fits. Using the Commando proto isn't justifiable against its cost because the one extra mod doesn't increase your power or survivability that much and worse, the fitting doesn't allow a full proto fit even then. So I mostly field basic and advance suits.
You can't mount a significant tank with four slots because all you're adding is a small buffer to your slow target so what you fit is likely a damage mod (reinforce natural bonus) and an armour rep (you're too slow to keep up with the rest of the squad so you look to your own independent survival.) Leaving two slots for what? Speed and bunny mod giving you still less mobility than your assault. E-war is redundant so its usually a shield recharger or a green bottle.
Commandos die a lot. Taking on an assault on your own is often a bad idea because of the strafe's and bunnies and if you happen to be winning the engagement you can expect them to run away and recharge because they can do that. Two shots from a shotgun will take you out and you melt pretty quick to everything else too. There's some luck involved and the rock, paper scissors aspect that the modular fitting provides, a commando can still do a 'Rambo' and take out three guys and a tank all on his own but the odds are against. There's a reason they used to say playing commando was playing the game in hard mode.
Success wise I've had good results in two places; the meat grinder defending or attacking with relentless close quarters in a mob or out on the flanks where we can use the damage bonus. It suits my play style which is to charge in and shoot lots of bullets. The best place for a commando is as part of an attacking line, backing up the squad and using the damage bonus but without drawing fire that it can't take and there commando is king, its what he does best and he can do some serious damage even if all he does is rack up kill assists and scare the tanks away.
So yes, lets have a buff, lets keep all the suits but give us a buff; more slots or manoeuvrability to increase our survivability because the enemy has become more dangerous and we haven't improved yet to match them.
"The best enemy is the one that shoots at you all game... and misses!"
