I was just in my randomly rolled Amarr Scout with a laser rifle and a magsec (context) and doing really well for some reason.
I think my best run was 19/6, using a standard suit with a terrible fitting because it was literally randomly generated. The majority of those kills were with the magsec
I have like 0 skills in them, and I think I might dump 2.5m just to see what they're like with a sidearm damage mod at proto. It is basically a long-range breach SMG with tighter spread that has a slightly easier time with shields. The only downside being the tiny charge up before firing that I barely noticed, and of course not as much damage to armor.
They used to be more common when first introduced, but did the +15% to armor change for minmatar weapons really make it absolete
Don't get me wrong, I love the breach SMG as much as the next guy, but the range on the magsec seems to make it more versatile and worth it to ADS with.
Opinions?

Love the magsec... when it works. The vast majority of the time, my magsec rounds do no damage. Just too unreliable unfortunately

It's not that bad of a weapon. It's just not as reliable as the other sidearms.
I only have it on 1 or 2 fits. SMG's, ScP's, and BP's are on the others with the occasional Flaylock Pistol.

Was thinking the same myself. Got an officer Magsec from the lab the other day (sorry can't remember the name) the stats on that thing look mighty.
I use to have an issue with the kick but it doesn't seem to be as bad these days |

I thought I was going crazy, so the no damage thing is something others have experienced as well?

For the most part I think it's a great weapon. Some people say the min smg is better. I dunno. I think it's a matter of personal opinion

Yeah... It's a common thing on rail weaponry -- especially this thing.
The spool time is sometimes a detriment when you're dealing with a surprise CQC encounter, or trying to finish someone off mid range.

Switching to magsec and grabbing trigger too fast causes it to not fire at all.

Its more situational. I use it with my caldari assault fits when i know i'm going to be in relative cqc ahead of time, and i cant depend on my RR because of its kick. Like you probably did with your amarr scout/laser rifle. Where you have second or two to realize the enemy is coming in closer than you would be comfortable with. Its more defensive IMO than offensive.
Its not very good as an emergency sidearm, which is what most people use them for. In an emergency cqc , the smg is still king.

It doesn't happen with the RR for me, just the magsec, where I clearly fire bullets and they get a blue marker but yield no damage. The charge up doesn't hurt me that much as its more of a flanking sidearm rather than a backup.
