It would be nice if members of the squad could give meaningful information; presenting a more complete and useful tac-net, especially to players that are not using Voice.
I have heard players say regarding playing with a good squad leader, it's more like playing an off-line/cooperative game. I believe this is due to the context in which the world is presented. I believe that this is a crucial point to move forward in Dust, so that player communication can be furthered, and people can give meaningful feedback without the use of Voice. To accomplish this best, I suggest that we use the six types of 'ground' as presented by Sun Tzu in the Art of War. This would allow each player to give their opinion in a simple, yet meaningful way. These six types are:
Accessible Ground: This could indicate that squad-mates are ready to advance openly in the field Entangling Ground: This could indicate that squad-mates would be willing to overtake and hold an area Temporizing Ground: This could indicate that squad-mates think the area they are in is easy to defend Narrow Passes: This could indicate that squad-mates are ready to take and hold a position in extended-attrition Precipitous Heights: This could indicate that squad-mates think a notible position is high above the battleground Very Distant: This could indicate that squad-mates think that an area is not occupied or that it is not worth defending
Together, with 3 or 4 different player's opinions available for the squad leader to synthesize, you could have a very meaningful fabric in which to make the complex decisions of battle.

As cool as this concept sounds, how on earth would it be implemented without being incredibly awkward to use?

It would be difficult, but that's because it's meant to be deep and allow for procedural outcomes (sorry, I just watched the 2008 spore video). The magic is that you don't have to use it if you don't want to.
I'd be happy with a simpler option too. It's easier to trim a hedge than grow one... so feel free to trim away!
