So after all this time having my own personal Drone on PSHome and seeing it hover over top of my merc suited home toon, I was hoping that maybe we could bring in some personal Drones of our own to the battlefield. Something to Repair my armor or shields on my Fatsuit, something to guard my back while I Snipe, something to lend a healing hand to my brethren while I am shooting enemies in my LogiSis suit and can't man the repair tool or protect me from my enemies while I am.
- Reapair Armor
- Repair Shield
- Pew Enemies that are within 10-15m
The gist of the idea would be to have a separate drone type for each purpose (defense or logistics) that is equipped to the suit in an equipment or grenade slot (I am partial to the grenade slot but think this would be cool either way).
Drones would have HP and could be shot at and blown up or recalled to their holding slot where they would regenerate shields. Drone Armor HP could be repaired using a repair tool.

Buried somewhere in the Legion forum, the devs said they had something like that planned for Legion. Even had a model and everything.

Make it a piece of equipment but give it multiple versions.
For example -
A personal rep drone A personal scanner A personal nanohive A personal guard (shoots anything that is red with a 15 m range) A personal scout drone (you can control like a dropship and explore other areas.

Oh definitely great ideas towards uses for the drones.
See my thoughts were more along the lines of the drone we have on the PSHome (sorry no screen cap) the buddy robot from the thread not really what I was thinking but I'm open to rolling ball drones that stay close of can be directed if the floating behind me drone to protect my keister is out of the question.
I don't mind the form it takes but I believe that something like that would be useful and easy enough to make fit in with lore and could theoretically be included in lore as one of the tools mercs come up with to deal with the increasing Jovian presence in New Eden. Salvager Drones and Logi drones as well as combat drones exist already in Eve, they would be easy to represent in a similar manner in Dust even if they are super small versions of the ones used by pilots.

I don't believe it would destroy the logi role, rather you would be able to have a better logi, able to do more with equipment (multiple drone types) while still keeping you in action as a logi reviving people, planting other equipment or keeping yourself up or your buddy next to you with more reps from the drone, and your repair tool or providing cover for you while reviving a team mate, there are many options here to be explored.

I'm leaning towards making the drone fill in an equipment slot. You can just select it then press R1 to deploy by throwing it. |

Wow, I haven't seen that game before but yes similar, my thought was one drone for each ability, not the multiple ability drone, but yes.

I cannot for the life of me decide if I like this idea or not.
On the one hand, it'd greatly diminish the role of the logi, one of my main roles, if it could repair armor at even a standard repper rate. It'd be a constantly focused, always close, never losing line of sight beam of rep. Sure they can be destroyed, but while the enemy is aiming for the floating, moving ball you're probably getting shots in on their face. And if it is destroyed you can go to the nearest build-a-bear workshop and replace it with another one. There would be a decline in logibros and potential logistics users, and there are few enough of those as it is. At least that I've seen.
On the other hand, logis have one of the easiest, highest SP gaining roles in the game. Go in with a decent squad or even just a heavy or two, make sure they're someone who knows to cover their healer and let them run into danger. You just need to make sure your strafe game is good if you want to keep up with the damage your guy is taking without dying or losing line of sight. Not to mention not everyone is lucky enough to run a match with a logi who wants to follow you, specifically you, around and help keep you alive. Especially if you aren't wielding an HMG. Something I'm pretty damn guilty of, myself. Heavies are our babies and we need to make sure they're properly nourished with plenty of nanos.
For the drone shooting anyone getting into 10-15 meters, most reds who get into that range either have a shotgun or nova knives. By the time I turn around to help my drone deal with them I'll probably be dead unless they're a total noob. And I doubt the drone will be that large of an asset in a firefight, otherwise it'd be too OP. So it's either constant running whenever your drone fires at something stupid enough to get close to you or you about face and hope you aren't looking at the muzzle of a shotgun or a knife in your ribs. Plus a 10-15 meter range for doing nothing but zapping reds leaves it near useless since it's not going to defend itself if someone wants to take it out from a distance, likely wouldn't be powerful enough to pose a threat if it did, and most engagements take place at distances much further than 10-15 meters. It would literally only be useful for early warning shotgun/nova knife wielders.
Which I guess is actually pretty nice if you're real good at getting the f*ck out of the way, but not everyone is.
Now, as for the suggestions Delta514 made, I would really like to have a mobile nano-hive, even if it ran out of nanobots and popped just like the regular ones, even if it had a lower resupply rate than the weakest nano-hive. I hate running low on ammunition and having to decide if I want to deploy a nano-hive and have one less for later, in case there's an actual large scale battle. Having a mobile nano-hive unit would be wonderful. The downside to this would be the nano-drone deciding when to resupply. I don't want it to give me back the five bullets from an AR I used to take out a Scout. That's a waste.
And I would definitely use a scanner version, as well. But I think this one would probably get the most flak for basically being an easy-mode scanner device. You don't have to switch to it to activate it, it'll constantly be scanning, and it'll basically kill most stealth suits.
The scout drone seems like it'd be a bit complicated, though. I'm not sure what to say about that. |

Killzone 3 did a great job of multiplayer drones. CCP should take a very close look at this game for inspiration.

Interesting application of the drones in the orbit the beacon and kill people form. Not really recallable to repair though for use later in the battle, I imagine there is a limit to the number of drones in Killzone (as there would be in DUST?) so refilling depleted drone cartridge isn't an option at a nanohive for instance.
I would suggesting adapting the orbit behaviour to allow the drone to orbit the merc, or be stationary behind them floating with them and having a sentry like panning of their firing arc 180 degrees behind or in front of the merc selectable.
