We all hate dying in one shot from a Thales, a core locus, getting picked off by a rail rifle you didn't see, etc.
Yet someone in the squad dies by a mlt plasma cannon and the whole squad laughs and cheers for the red dot that did it.
It's impressive, it takes actual skill, and not everyone can do it. Heck it might have been a stray PLC shot from across the map that just happened to hit you in the face, and it's still not that bad.
Yet getting killed by an ADS is the most annoying thing in the world, despite how much sp, practice, and effort it takes to line up a shot and hit the tiny dot on the ground below
If other guns had major drawbacks to require more skill (massive increases to kick/dispersion, but possibly more damage and longer range), would other "OP" weapons be more enjoyable to be killed by? Imagine if the easiest guns to use did the least amount of damage, and skill vs reward was the balancing factor rather than alpha damage vs range.
Take a step back and think about why you use your favorite weapon. Is it just because it's the easiest to get kills with? Do you actually like using the weapon?
Or think about it another way. If the plasma cannon did 600 splash damage and was essentially a shield destroying core locus, would you view it differently?
Just something to think about

I think it's just the rarity we seem them that makes the difference. There's nothing special about getting killed by a core locus grenade, everyone and their grandmother has them in stock and ready to use, but when you get killed by or see something like a Breach Shotgun or Burst Scrambler Pistol in the killfeed, you've gotta give the person credit for using something that rarely gets any field time. With the buff and the myofibril changes, we're still seeing more PC's being used, but compared to things like RR's and ScR's, the PC is exceptionally underused. When it gets buffed to the point that everyone wants to use it, it probably won't be as amusing to get killed by it... kind of like knives. NK's used to be something you saw someone using and immediately gave the player credit for, especially if they're doing good. Now, knifers are sent hate mail just like any other FoTM weapon, called cowards and the like, and rarely receive GG's for doing well. Tis the price we pay for CCP's "balance"
What? Am I mad? Why do you ask?

As you noted it has nothing to do with skill. What it is though is all about reputation and about understanding concepts.
Most people understand how PCs kill, they can work it, they just lack the finer skills to use it effectively. Drop ships on the other hand are beyond most people just trying to operate the thing, thus they don't get used, thus they don't really understand the concept of the dropship's risk v reward.
They see a dropship shooting at them when they have a rifle and they think "dam, this is cheap, I can't do squat", ignoring all the hazards and aiming and controls that it took to do that. Its simply a lack of perspective and reputation weapons have.

90% of the time someone gets a kill with a PLC it's not because of skill but because of luck. many people run PLC as a joke weapon to **** around with not something they use as a primary weapon all the time where they are polishing their skill with it.
Vote Viktor Hadah for CPM2 or i'll take your districts and hurt you.
