I haven't played dropships for several builds, but it was the first role I really got into when I started playing and it's stuck with me ever since. I don't fly much these days as I rarely squad and it's hard to enjoy getting smashed into fixed objects while "driving" a flying death bus full of blueberries.
With that said I would love for the dropship pilot to be a viable role. If you are a pilot what are your thoughts on these points?
What do you think the proper role for the standard vs assault dropship should be?
What should the strengths of each type be?
What should the weakness of each type be?
For example, I think the standard dropship should be faster and more durable than the LAV. It should be the best way to put multiple mercs into or onto a point simultaneously.
The standard dropship should have great acceleration and high tank. It should be able to fly quickly to a contested point and hold position for a sustained period while loading or unloading mercs.
The standard dropship should be lightly armed. It should have enough offensive skill to suppress enemy infantry fire but not to do gun runs or go on the offensive.
In summary, I would like standard dropship acceleration to be increased, perhaps at the expense of top speed. I would like infantry AV efficiency vs the standard dropship reduced allowing for greater ability to loiter. Installation and vehicle AV efficiency should stay the same. I would also suggest that the standard dropship door gunners be restricted to blaster and railgun turrets, no AOE small missles. This would nerf offensive capability and make the ship most lethal while hovering for pickup or dropoff. In summary high tank / low offense. If you want to be lethal in a standard ship you need to be moving slowly.
The ADS would be different in that it's primary role would be offensive. Remove the ability to transport passengers, you would just have the pilot and two door gunners. ADS ships can equip small missles. ADS ships are very fast but have less tank than standard ships. In summary low tank / high offense.

And you can't exactly nerf the max speed of dropships: I believe it used to (or still does) state in its stats that every dropship has an insanely high max speed, because you can simply put the ship into a dive, then level out before you hit the ground.
I would have to disagree that standard dropships are capable of sustained hover under fire. Whether assault or standard the vision transitioned to the "drive-by" model where the ship is under fire for a brief period of time before fleeing. Standards do have more CPU / PG but also due to knock back from swarms it isn't really feasible to hover and support troops. I can't think of any time in recent memory I've seen a DS take off or land under fire. If you do, you will die. The most common DS tactic I see is the "yo-yo" where a DS dives, attacks briefly then uses afterburners to climb to max height and rep. They also aren't restricted to rail / blaster and they don't have reduced effect from infantry AV.

The controls are terrible. It feels to me like artificial lag is built in so the ship seems to move in slo-mo. The problem is that flying a DS doesn't feel like flying, it's more of a chore.
I'm interested in the anti-tank role which might work for the ADS but still leaves the DS without the ability to fulfill it's role.
