All depends on your main weapon. For long range weapons like rail rifles/ lasers go smg. For ars or assault rail rifles go flaylock. Just a sidearm that can serve a different purpose from your main.

I would rather skill into a whole new weapon at proto tbh. I don't have any weapon with proficiency to 5 (max is 3 for officer gear). Ask your self, should you skill into a whole new weapon, or master a weapon that will have more benefits, but skill is more important. And I would do smg.

Depends what you need a sidearm for.
The SMG can completely replace a light weapon in CQC, while a flaylock is a good finishing weapon when you run out of ammo, or are about to overheat your main weapon.
Some details can be ignored

Flaylock for fun and almost strictly finishing off wounded opponents. SMG for overall utility. |

I don't know what weapons you do have. ALL light weapons at pro and proficiency 1-3. If you don't have it, skill into combat rifles.

I have prof 3 for both. I use SMG for semi-automatic or low rate of fire primaries like the scrambler rifle. I use the flaylock as a backup to high rate of fire automatic weapons like the assault combat rifle. I do prefer the flaylock for its coolness factor, and I frequently surprise myself with the kills I can get with it.

I have both maxed out and I feel the flaylock complements the combat riffle better than the submachine gun and the submachine gun complements the mass driver better.
This is because I like to have both an area of effect weapon as well as a rapid fire straight shooting weapon.
So my advice to you is that if you mostly use the combat riffle go for the flaylock pistol. This will allow you to kill enemies that are behind cover, quickly destroy equipment and remote explosives and it can still be used to finish opponents when you run out of amo.
If you mostly use the mass driver, the sub machine gun will help you make those kills that are hard to get with the mass driver like when an enemy has the higher ground in close to midrange combat. |

I'm also a Matari purist. And have both maxed out. Do you have an SMG BPO? If so SMG. My syndicate rocks with max skills. IMO, the Flaylock is WAY WAY better than the SMG on my Min Sent. But I use both on my Min Assault. Also might wanna keep in mind the optimization skills and fitting costs. That Specialist flaylock may only have 3 rounds, but man, the fitting costs allows for some seriously cool fits.

I do have a Toxin as well as at least Fitting Optimization 2 on all of the Matari weapons.
I have CR Everything 5, just playing catch up with the others.
