I recently spent the better part of an ambush match trying out being a door gunner for a dropship and it was so bad I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. You have like a 30 degree range of vertical aiming which makes it impossible to hit any ground targets unless:
a) the pilot is moving forward and thus angled nose down and flying toward the target so you can use your horizontal aiming to make up the difference
or
b) the dropship is on the ground
Neither of these is acceptable. I don't understand why this is so restrictive. It makes the fact that dropships have gunner points almost pointless and you should not be doing this with mechanics that require teamwork like this one. You should be encouraging them.
I'd like to request that this angle get increased to something reasonable like 120 degrees. |

I would move the gun rack aft to the rear most position, this would cut back on the aft attack capabilities but increase the forward attack abilities. |

I'm a Dropship Pilot by trade.
The door gunner isn't meant to be able to easily strike groud targets. Even on Blackhawks and other 'real' world transport helicopters, the position of the door gunner means he has a limited field of fire anyway. Both from the fact that the gun is mounted on a side frame, and the door gunner is sitting / standing on the helicopter bed and can't "hang-out" the door.
Being said, from the impressions I get, the door gunner is supposed to combat aerial threats while in flight, and provide supporting fire when landing to pick up soldiers or taking off with said soldiers.

I understand the real life implications of this, but I think fudging a little for the sake of a video game is pretty worth it here.
People aren't going to be interested in being a door gunner for you unless it nets them the opportunity to get points for SP. Those points primarily come from kills, so allowing a better vertical range of firing would be nice and encourage team work from roving drop ships.
Also, its completely feasible to just jump out of the dropship and use your dampeners so coming in for a landing to drop off troops won't happen as regularly which will further limit the time that a door gunner would even be useful.
If it doesn't happen the dropship will primarily be used to permanently place swarm launcher spammers in ultra hard to reach players and be dicks. |

Gunnery positions are fairly useless as is needs at least some more ability to look down ii meen if your more than 5 metres above target there under the barrel which usless
Despite if it is realistic or not it needs more use simply because well the realistic argument never works in dust for some reason look at the sraffing, look at the amount of abuse they can take. |

I think they'll be making improvements, but remember - It's a drop ship, not a gunship. It's guns are meant to be defensive, not offensive. |

yes, but the guns should defend it from ground treaths, if you can't aim down how are you supposed to defend the dropship from swarm launchers ? |

Pretty Sure I heard something about defending against Swarm Launchers via Pilot-controlled Countermeasures somewhere... If I'm mistaken...
THEY SHOULD BE PUT IN!
The guns defend not the ship, but the people boarding, or (if for some reason) departing via groud landing. And other Aerial Threats.
What I would like to see, for those more interested in flying an Aerial Attack Craft is just that... an Aerial Attack Craft, like a Gunship. Give the Gunners an external seat on the outside of the ship, and the ability to turn a full half sphere to attack from.
Course, I'll still fly a Dropship, but the Gunships could protect my ass as I drop off the troops. |

I dont generall land to drop off soldiers.. but unless your playing the 'Improved Dropship' and people know they can spawn in you after they die, you're generally landing to pick people up.
Oh, and on that note... I don't take the 'better' Dropships into these battles... it's a waste of ISK as people generally dont spawn on you, no matter how much you hover over an objective. |

Most of the kills I see people get from dropships involve just squashing them. |

That was kinda the point I was getting at, Dust doesn't currently have gunships, we have dropships. There is no reason they have to function like helicopters today (personally I am very annoyed that the devs chose this open air design reminiscent of helicopters today rather than something that makes sense for the future but I digress). The pilot gets guns and other tech and if he's got cooperating crew, there should be extra guns. Who says they need to be just for defense or just for defense of people. Guns are guns. Having some sort of artificial limitation in range is just dumb and not fun.
/rant on I don't even know why we have this throwback concept of a door gunner period. Even today's military is looking to transition to systems for both ground vehicles and air vehicles that DOESN'T involve the gunner hanging his ass out there to get shot. But somehow in the future this is still the way to go? It's true we are all immortal but we aren't cheap and that makes no sense. /rant off |

90% of the threat to dropships in dust are on the ground.
Dropships are crap at shooting things on the ground.
This means dropships are unable to get to where they need to go before getting shot out of the sky.
Drop ships need to be able to shoot ground targets freely without the crappy angle restriction... it's bad enough that the pilot who is spending all of the money on the ship and the fit has to rely on other people to defend his ship let alone them not even being able to defend it properly....
Drop ships are a waste of isk until this is fixed.
