Seriously, are we supposed to?
I've been playing EVE for awhile now and I certainly don't see people in their shiny expensive things all the time. Rarely do people in my corporation use their best ships and modules.
So, I ask, are we supposed to run proto gear 24/7? If not, then maybe gear is not expensive enough.
Legit question, would like a serious answer.

I actually use Advance suits and Proto weapons. It's cheap and feigns Proto to some degree. Only time I go full Proto is when I'm pissed, buy some sentinel ak.0 and wreck ****. I mostly use ADV and MLT
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

DUST doesn't have an end game.
Wearing the shiniest gear you can get your hands on is as close to an end game as it gets. Why would people not use what they skilled into? And, to be clear, many people with maxed out builds and tons of ISK still run around in BPOs just for the lulz.
As for Vehicles. Yes, you really do need to run proto all the time, at least if you'd rather not watch your vehicle explode over and over and over again.

The 2 rules of New Eden (originally from EVE) are as follows:
1. Don't use what you can't afford to lose
2. Everything is a scam.
This should answer your question but I will elaborate further. If you have enough ISK to run Proto 24/7 then go for it. If not then don't. Officer gear is a different beast entirely.

I mix it up. Advanced with standard. Thrrow in some proto stuff from time to time. Using strictly proto is to expensive. |

The primary difference between Eve Online ships and Dust 514 dropsuits is that all Eve ships are manufactured directly by the players while suits are not. That is a driving factor in all this. Proto gear is just not expensive anymore especially now that Experimental and Officer gear appear to be the new high-tier items here.
While Experimental gear can only be manufactured by a player-owned warbarge and Officer gear can only be acquired either by salvage or strongbox, these items already very expensive. A pair of Ishukone Nova Knives on the NPC market only cost me 12,975 ISK at the most while the Officer-variant Nothi's Nova Knives cost me about 400,000 ISK a pair. That is over 3000% more than the Ishukones.
I'm confident that protos at this point seem to be sustainable on a competitive level, but the Officer gear is the one thing that is definitely not sustainable due to the factors I mentioned already.

They should throw the old beta Heavy vk.1 price tag on all protosuits for the lulz.

Some people have already made ridiculous amounts of isk over the past year or two. For those, isk will never be an issue.
Even myself, I'm not that great but affording proto now is easier than ever before (normally run blueprints myself to be honest), what with all the additional sources of isk, extra battle payouts, selling assets ect. So I am sure the top players find it very easy to run proto 24/7.

I'm not poor but i'm also not rich. I can afford to use 210k (my main assault) fits and proto tanks yet i'm still at the same ISK level no matter what.
It's an end game, kind of. That's the point. You go further and further to achieve end game status where you can enjoy game no matter what.
Ps. It's like in other games. When somebody played the game for 2 years now? He/She deserves to use the best **** all the time.
