It's a nod to the Red Wedding from Game of Thrones referring to the the 2014 [I think] Fanfest announcement that Dust would not be receiving more large scale iterations by playing on digital user name our own CCP Rouge goes by. Was ultimately seen as a blindside and betrayal by the player base considering we had no prior warning and actions taken by CCP seemed to suggest otherwise.
Oh and.......

During Fanfest 2014, shortly after CCP Rouge came on board to run DUST. They announced that Rouge and most of the remaining developers would be working on something called Project Legion which looked somewhat like Dust on the PC.
At that point they also informed that future development on Dust would be more or less stopped and Rattati was placed in charge to maintain and balance the game through hotfixes.
All of this was announced during the Dust514 Keynote mind you, and more or less had nothing to do with Dust. In fact there was very little to do with Dust at fanfest at all. Dust players felt like CCP had abandoned them and jumped to a new project, hence the overall outrage.
Obviously things have change a bit since CCP more or less refuses to talk about Legion at all, and we've gotten further development on Dust than was initially expressed during that time post-Fanfest 2014, aka Rouge Wedding. So at this point....who knows what the plan is, but I sure wish CCP would unzip their lips and start talking about what their plan for the franchise is.

True mentioned the etymology, I'll mention the reasoning:
"So we can't do what we want on PS3. We can only do it on PC. So here is a new game. Okay, 23 minutes for a keynote seems good, bye!" Questions like "what about my SP, my Aurum, my gear?" were left unanswered. It than was followed by 6 months of total silence as there were more layoffs, which put DUST in the worst spot it had ever been in. Finally, Legion still has not even been greenlit.
So the crux of the matter is CCP Rouge got on stage, said "we failed", talk about how important the community was, talked for a very brief amount of time about a game that wasn't what people were there to hear about, left the community completely in the dark for a long time, and did it all in such a tone deaf manner. CPM0 told Rouge not to tell people at FanFest, insisting the community should know beforehand. The term is less about the single event and more about the entire atmosphere that CCP had created for the community. The keynote (Rouge Wedding) is just shorthand for it all.
Oh, and the fact that I paid 20 dollars to watch the HD stream of the Executive Producer announcing the game's failure is the cherry on the turd sundae for me. "That Bad German Guy" reacts to EVE Legion

Rouge = Red
It was more that CCP Rouge got hired into DUST 514 team... He has an amazing resume working on games... DUST during this time spent like 5-6 months without an Executive producer... After CCP Jjian quit..
During this time DUST 514 went through some rough rough patches...
CCP Rouge got hired... DUST 514 had a rather large community team that kept stringing along the community on how CCP Rouge would give us a mission statement or an update or some kind of lead on where DUST was headed...
5-6 months later Fanfest came and the entire community was Hyped... Gaming sites where hyped.. Gamespot, IGN... All Covering DUST's new content.. As 1.8 just dropped with Racial dropsuits and weapons, Cloaking...
At this time the community only got a brief forum post from CCP Rouge... The Hype was real as the community team let Fanfest be the pinnacle of DUST's future.. And we finally get to see CCP Rouge and hear his thoughts about DUST 514 and the future...
DUST 514 Keynote speech for fanfest.... Everyone tunes in... Tons of DUST players that became CCP fans actually paying to goto Iceland and be at that keynote speech...
CCP Rouge get's on stage and shows CEOPyrex's video he made... Talks about how great the DUSt 514 community is.. How we are everything and without us DUST 514 wouldn't exist...
Then pretty much proceeded to put his two middle fingers up in the air and say... Frack the PS3, Frack console, and Frack DUST 514..... Then pretty much never mentioned DUST 514 again...
Got off stage...
Community exploded... We got a short forum post from him as damage control... Then barely heard anything from CCP for 6 months.
Most of the players pact up and moved on.
The population we largely have in DUST now is a completely new cycled in population... As DUST completely renews 70-80% of it's player base every month. |

20 bucks says rouge actually got thrown under the bus by marketing.
I'm trying to envision a game developer with his resume going "Oh yeah, this announcement at FanFest when everyone's hanging at the edge of their seats for DUST news will be a great idea!"
This reeks of "we don't ever get to hear the whole story behind that disaster."

I Just asked my wife if she remembers me near yelling that morning when tuning into the live feed for the keynote speech... She actually gave a **** about the game i was playing and watched the presentation with me... She still is shaking her head about it.
It was like the last thing I expected them to do after just rebuilding the DUST 514 brand for half a year.
It was like watching a 8 year old build a sandcastle all day... Just to go *Frack it*, and kick it in before they put the stick representing the flag on the top.
It leaves one searching for words to explain just how wtf that was. |

Given that Legion was his personal project, that Rouge moved resources away from Dust almost immdiately after being hired, several months prior to Fanfest the CPM were fully aware of Project Legion and hyped FanFest anyway.
I wont even specualte as to whether or not it was nefarious, it certainly wasnt. its more like he wanted to surprise everyone and show what he could acomplish and completley, unbelievably messed up. He sacrificed Dust on PS3 on his vision for dust for PC and screwed up both. He's not a victim of marketing, just his own discisions. He is a normal guy and **** like that happens to everyone.
So yeah, I'll take that bet.

It is mind boggling to say the least. It is most unfortunate that CCP had to learn the hard way to finally get it in their heads that hyping things up without backing it up is never a good idea.

In short; things happened, there where actually two weddings but we don't discuss the details of the second one as it would be closer to the game of thrones reference.
Yes there is no new information on Legion still to this day.
While the Wedding itself gave CCP one black eye; the entire fanfest gave them two black eyes and CCP has reeled back from that and is now learned a painful lesson about marketing and game development are not always on the same time line. Which is why this years fanfest has been probably the least splendor and least wondrous of them all BUT it has the most amount of concrete in the history of the company's fanfest; All promises made at fan fest this year is being meet in tomorrows patch in eve just about and the rest over the horizon in various stages of testing and tweaking now.
Bottom line CCP learned its lesson.
Unlike Comcast (customer harassment) or EA (who has yet again changed policy in AU from illegal to barely legal)

Breakin would win his bet.
And IWS hit the nail on the head with his post. Fanfest 2014 was a real lesson for CCP and in a break from tradition, one that they learned from.
I spoke to Hilmar a lot over this Fanfest and the whole theme was less of the shiny, nothing that couldn't be delivered by the end of 2015 and nothing about future aspirations. Even this years Eve Fanfest trailer was far more subdued than normal.
Dust actually benefitted from being low key this year. The CPM there had huge amounts of time to discuss the game one on one with the Devs, players came to us directly and had questions answered as much as was able. Lots of Eve players were also curious as to what was happening to Dust. Rattati, Frame And the CPM got a lot of stuff done.
It was a good Fanfest for Dust.

Would of been nice to have atleast a demo area setup for DUST at fanfest... 10 Playstations running and allowing EVE players and game press to jump in and play the game, Maybe an elaborate cardboard cut out...... Developers showing off their project first hand and explaining things.
If anything showed at this year's fanfest for CCP.... It is the passion and innovation with their IP's are gone... If CCP and EVE development doesn't wake up soon... They will be left in the stagnate development stage they have been stuck in for the last 7 years with massively declining revenues...
ANd when new products which focus on innovation and pushing game genre's to new depths... Start splitting EVE's market share further... Using CCP's own methods in which got them to their position while they slacked off and Largely relied on the innovation and ground breaking mechanics installed in the beginnings of the game when there was passion and innovation...
EVE is stuck in the same mode WoW is... All they are adding is new maps and new classes and reskins of armor... EVE is just offering new Wormhole space, New ships based around niche gameplay.. And reskins for the last 5 years... All While HUGE massive mechanics talked about 8 years ago left untouched or even discussed.
POS mechanics being ancient... The entire rework put to the side when the developers quit CCP to move to riot... Player driven Space exploration and player built stargates Allowing sandbox like expansion of the universe.. Reworked Soverignty.. Planets actually mattering in owning space.. Station walking and interriors of space stations and ships, Social spaces so that you can sit down with another EVE player... Show off your Aurum gear.. Outpost revamps... Escalation of what Incursions where even for...
I could go on for a massive wall of text... CCP as the passionate innovative developing studio that are building games to be cool, is largely gone... Not by what words are said, but by simply measuring their actions compared to their words... And when you do this.. They are giant liar's for the last 7 years. |

There actually was a demo area for Dust in the PvP room.
Six PS3 with individual new accounts stocked with gear and playing pub matches. While the queue to play them wasn't on the scale on the Valkyrie queue, they were always busy and I spent a lot of time there answering questions.
