Is there currently any visual coordinate system in place? Other than this game, the only other game I've had the priviledge to beta test was MAG. During that beta, MAG made it possible, by holding down all 4 shoulder buttons for 1 second, to turn on one's coordinates on the grid in the map, on your HUD. Two little numbers would pop up down in the bottom corners of your screen. I forget which was which, but say the left was your location on the X axis, and right was Y.
They used it to track physical anomalies and glitches. So you could post 'I was trying to jump over a rock and got stuck to it. It happened at 24.4 and 119.2', or 'I brushed up against a wall and fell through it below the screen. This was at 413.6 and 57.0', you get the idea. It was a great tool for pinpointing specific problem areas or phenomena related to map elements. It would be very helpful to report any irregularities we encounter.
And then....
After launch Zipper left the coordinates feature in, and its effects on gameplay were sensational. It was hands-down one of the most useful communication tools in the game behind the mic. Every single squad I joined, I told them how to turn on their coordinates, and it made tactics planning and learning the maps so much easier. So many conversations went this way,
Me: "I found an awesome ambush spot, every enemy vehicle passes here. Bring a rocket launcher"
Teammate: "Where are you"
Me: "Under some pipes"
Teammate: "There are 2 million feet of pipeline on this 1km sq. map!!!"
Me: "249.3 and 67.6, look at your coordinates and move around. When your numbers get closer, you're heading in the right direction"
Teammate: "Oh, there you are"
I effectively went from a laying down under some pipes needle in a gigantic haystack, to a positional beacon for my team, while remaining totally hidden from the enemy. INFORMATION IS POWER.
Does anyone see any implications, on maps as big as these, for gameplay around this kind of system in Dust? Calling for pickup/dropoff from dropship pilots, perhaps? Having a scout go to a sweet spot and drop your squad a vehicle to use between objectives, telling you where it's parked? Directing a unit to take a particular asset or emplacement, as an MCC commander? In fact, as an MCC commander, using your reticule over the map, and NOT having some relational number to relay grid info to troops seems like a massive hinderance. |

+1 this
There was a topic started some time ago semi requesting something like this. There's a single point in the map that if you're lucky enough to find it, you'll get stuck in this ditch. Slope is too steep and the other side is a wall of a cliff. It was requested to be able to easily point it out.

@soven- oh wow, magic hole? definitely need to know where that is, if only to shoot fish in a barrel :)
@eco- my thinking exactly!
It shouldn't be something unreasonably hard to implement, and it would deepen gameplay in my opinion. Never hurts to ask. Check with teammates if they'd like the feature, then get em to make a little friendly noise about it. By all appearances, CCP is listening. |

I've only seen one thread posted about it, so I'd imagine it's not something people will come across often.
I might be able to find it again if given the opportunity. I was trying my hand at sniping and it was at a corner near the boundary and I fell in as I was backing up from hostile fire. |

Greetings,
Ras Actual wrote:Two little numbers would pop up down in the bottom corners of your screen. I forget which was which, but say the left was your location on the X axis, and right was Y. Overall, I like this and think it makes a lot of sense.... Having said that however, I feel it would be better if they just posted the numbers right below the clone counts and left it on at all times.
Our suits should provide this information in real time for us anyway. One of the biggest problems I have seen so far when it comes to teamwork is coming up with a way to communicate positioning and targetting. For example in one of my battles last night they were saying LAVs are coming in from the left... Ummm, who's left? Enemy has a HAV at the B gate... Ummm, is that the A / B gate or the B / C gate?
Having these numbers would be in our HUD would be helpful. Additionally it would be nice to have grid coordinates in the mini-map to use for target calling... Enemy HAV at 34 / 46.

I see that being very usefull in both testing and getting to a location if the Squad Leader doesn't know about his commands. |

Great idea but as Asno states lets just have the co-ords displayed at all times.
Also would be great if the main features on the map (such as CRUs) had names or identifiers |

Yeah I made a thread about coordinates a few days ago, although I originally thought of it as an aid to debug parts of the map.But it could be very useful for gameplay.
Copied from that thread because I am lazy -
There's going to be artillery turrets at some point it seems, so being able to have forward spotters utilise coordinates to communicate with the mobile artillery guys to accurately guide in shells on a target would be excellent. |
