I am in the same boat, ( new player who loves HAVs ) What I have found to work is sticking as close as I can to hills and buildings to buy myself some time as well as the ability to pop out and repair for a few seconds ( the default Medic Fitting comes with a repair tool that fixes suits and vehicles alike.) Something else I have found useful is trying to get some people in your tank with you. Sometimes just having the extra firepower of your all too often unused turrets can help change the battle in your favor ( Also, if I am honest I prefer being a turret gunner to actually driving the HAV as I dont have a ton of skills and it allows me to focus more on one specific job. ). Not always a win but I feel like I tend to do better with those two things added in.
Indeed. For a new player you've done incredibly well to identify and capitalise on two of the more useful core components of operating an HAV.
Cover, despite what people say, is one of the best tools in the game available to a tank. Counter intuitively the best manner of tanking damage in this game is.....not to take damage at all if you can help it and with clever use of cover to capitalise on HAV passive repair rates a tanker can extend their Operational Times in combat zones significantly more than would otherwise be possible if they were attacking from open ground.
Be aware that if you can see incoming swarms using Cover is not always a sure fire method of being protected as swarm launcher volleys sometimes clip through terrain to inflict damage.
Secondly as you progress you will find that it is literally impossible with Blaster Turrets and sometimes Missile Turrets to break through an enemy tank's armour HP if you do not have additional gunners in your HAV. A little tip to remember is that if you have friend on squad comms and who is squad leader you can have one of them enter the overhead battle map to mark enemy tanks, positions to target, and angles of attack.
A second and third pair of eye in a tank as well as another two guns on top of your own HAV turret is not to be under estimated.
Also of note by using two turrets you can ferry squad mates about the battlefield to attack isolated objectives or get close to enemy players with ranged weapons.

Blake Kingston wrote:I think it's a matter of how far you want to penetrate the field. The game is rather like chess - you want units covering other units - if you rush in with no cover, someone just comes and carves you up.
A sica tank can sit back near your own red line and provide support by making enemy tanks leery to fully extend across the field (mind out for when they wait for you to pop out - seems other players sica kill mine in two hits) and ping a lot of dropships for that matter.
The game will make you want to go solo rambo in revengence though. It's just a very bad idea to do so unless you have a disgusting amount of SP under your belt.
Sadly no tank has ever been scared of a Sica.

Currently armor tanks are king, with a lot of them running either dual hardener or dual repper and blasters can't kill each other. Rail tanks are prettymuch limited to sniping, and missile tanks are pretty useless.
As far as dropships go, use a forge & aim for the thrusters or a swarm launcher (swarms are the easier option). Mina you are wrong about the Missle Tanks, they can easily take down armor tanks. If everything goes right for you yeah sure. You make it go right, nah just circle the map and come up behind him.
Again you are overly simplifying. Simply managing to loop around behind an Armour tank is only half the job. You need to ensure all shots hit, your opponent does down Nitrous away from you, towards you, onto rough terrain, that you don't move onto rough terrain, etc.
Since Shield HAV have no barrel depression rough terrain is a nightmare for missile HAV.
