Background: I'm 30, a programmer, and have played just about every FPS shooter.
IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE READ THIS: Seriously all the devs should sit down for a day and play the first version of Tribes and Battlefield 2142. As this is the exact type of genre Dust will fit into.
1. If a player buys something like a HAV and they're not skilled for it the system should give them a warning message "You are not skilled for this item, buy anyway?" as nearly all FPS allow players to pilot any vehicle from the start.
2. Confusion, I bought an upgraded Sniper Rifle off the market and managed to put it in a fit. This worked fine the first battle I played, but the next battle it said "INVALID FITTING" make whatever I did wrong stupid proof.
3. There needs to be a quick way to see the level of skill of another player, such as ranks.
4. The run button should be X or something I can hold down easier and move, making it the movement direction button also the run button is awkward.
5. Maybe there should be some type of jump pack ala Tribes.
6. Skill points should automatically be assigned based on class but have the option to have this feature turned off into manual mode. Or maybe it should ask you when you create your character what option you want (and you can change it later).
7. It seems very complex on assigning loadouts or fittings, most of the time I didn't bother. Fro example in Battefield at the begging of the match and whenever you die you can change your loadout with ease... Dust doesn't seem to have that or I never figured it out. |

Videos in case of laziness..
Tribes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qY8s7X-f30
Battlefield 2142 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B68qCvkNXC4
As horrible as the above video is it gives you a brief overview of the types of gameplay.
Another better video of 2142 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tKqhkkGXRI
See the giant flying titan spaceship in orbit? Remind you of anything...
Mechs, Hover Tanks, Harrier like flying things... seriously 2142 has more advances than Dust at this point. And tribes was definitely a fun game. I am an Eve fan boy though so I hope it succeeds.
ALSO MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!! You need more of a military themed background / intro music. Make me feel like a merc not a spaceship pilot.
And I want to be able to press a button or something for quick voice commands. Defend our Generator! No. Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No. SHAZBOTn++ |

#3: Strongly agree with you, I'd like to see whats the skill level of the person I'm fighting.
#4: TOTAL disagreement, The sprinting button has to be R3 like it is. Maybe another control scheme, but default should be as is.
#5: TOTAL disagreement, those jetpacks are freaking cheap and ridiculous IMHO, whenever you fire at someone they just shoot up in the sky and rain down on you
#6: I'm not sure what you're trying to say.
#7: You can change your loadout while in-game, but it'll eventually kick you for being in-active, needs to be worked on. |

You can and do have backup fits... I'm confused by what you mean. Just buy 100 and restock on a whim via the fitting menu. |

If a suit becomes invalid during a battle. Use select to get to Neocom. From there you can restock your fittings 'on the fly' its a touch laggy at the mo but useable - plus you access while you are waiting to deploy so you cant get shot.

It would be nice to have a warning of how many fits you have left based on the lowest number of modules in that fit. |

Since the forum decided to ignore everything in my post but for the quote, I'll just sum up.
Half of the information or capabilities you're looking for are already in the game (with the exception of OPTIONAL key remapping, which I wouldn't object to). Look for said information/capabilities harder.
The things that aren't in the game, like jet packs, shouldn't be. I like Tribes as much as the next guy, but the addition of jet packs does not in fact make everything better. Despite popular opinion.
I'm all for a series of tutorials designed to introduce fresh players to the EVE universe and its mechanics. But I do not want the complexity that necessitates said tutorials to be sacrificed for the benefit of the uninitiated and lazy.
Give players the information, leave them to make their mistakes and fail or succeed based upon their use of that information. Do not "stupid proof" a single thing.
You don't want to do the legwork? Fittings and skills too hard for you to work your head around? Just can't be assed with the effort involved in planning and building your character?
I want you to end up the Mr. Bean of Dust mercs. Surviving each battle through sheer luck alone.
Failure must be a very real possibility, at all levels. From the fitting screen, to skill selection, to the battlefield and on to the meta game. |

1. There is a clear Green Check Mark or Red X mark when purchasing an item on the mark. If it is checked your have the basic training for it.
2. You only bought one, Then died and respawn leaving it on the battlefield. if someone ressed you wouldn't have lost this. Make me wonder if you played eve...get blown up and you lose everything.
3. You can't really do this in eve without help from outside source. You can't do it in real life either. I personally like the challenge this brings.
4. You should be able to Remap control completely don't need to be reworked. I personally like the controls
5. .... Then I better be able to lock onto with my shock trooper fitting
6. They need to are the certification system as in eve, but makes me think again you didn't play eve. This gave you clear skills to train for anyone that didn't want to customize their character to their own style. I like the current system myself, it is a lot nicer than eve training one skill. I can have multiple character and get somewhere with them.
7. You can hit start to bring up your menu screen while in combat or waiting to deploy you can purchase from the market or change loadouts in the middle of combat. You can also quickly restock invalid loadout from the fitting screen by selecting "restock" and selecting the amount you want. |

Actually you were warned, you simply didn't understand the warning you were given. When you looked at the market there was a red X over the skill book for the item. This means you are not qualified to use the item.
It is already as stupid proof as it can be. It clearly shows you in the fitting window exactly how many of each item you have, including the drop suit, though the dropsuit number is not as obvious as the others.
As a long time EVE player, I found the loadout and fitting system to be very easy and intuitive. I can see how non-EVE players would have trouble initially, but after the third or fourth fit, it should be pretty self explanatory. Now, I freely admit that mastering the fittings will be a lifetime of learning, but again as a long time EVE player, I really like that.

You don't get to see what skill level the programmer sitting next to you is at in RL, and you certainly don't get to see what skill level he is at when you are looking at his avatar in an FPS. Why would you get to see what his character's skill level is? Another **** NO!!!. I do not play EVE to be locked into a class, and I sure as hell won't play Dust to be locked into a class. In EVE and Dust, there are no classes, instead there are skills. You choose what skills you want and how focused you want them to be. This means that my Gallente infantryman can learn to be a scout or specialize in being a combat medic... I get to choose or even not choose. Quote:4. The run button should be X or something I can hold down easier and move, making it the movement direction button also the run button is awkward. What you are really asking for is the ability to completely remap the controls and this is the only suggestion I agree with. [quote]5. Maybe there should be some type of jump pack ala Tribes. The jump pack was just chesse and considering all of the other features that are planned for Dust, and already exists, it would be redundant and / or a waste of fit space.

1. There's a message when you go into the shop saying that anything with a red x for requirements can't be used unless you have the required skills
2. Every time you die you lose your equipment meaning you have to buy more than one of each weapon. You can restock during a match in the options.
3. I agree, It be cool if ranks effected what you've trained in some way.
4. You can tap the sprint button once and continue running as long as you are holding forward.
5. This would be cool, perhaps make it scout armor only.
6. I think just being able to que up what skills you want to train would be useful feature. This game kinda stays away from preset classes for a good reason though. It keeps the progression interesting.
7. Setting classes takes a bit of learning, but it isn't to hard to figure out I think. Also you have to choose a class before you spawn.

You are pretty dumb for a programmer.
1. There is already an indication that you can't use a vehicle - both at the market and when you attempt to make a new fitting using the vehicle (hint: it won't let you make one).
2. Your fit became invalid because you only bought a single sniper rifle and then when you died it was lost on the battlefield. But a new one by restocking your entire fit.
4. You don't need to hold down the stick to sprint, only click it in once to activate sprint.
6. What is the problem with assigning Skill Points? How would the system know which skill you wanted upgrading, given that at you can upgrade a dozen different aspects that directly relate to what you are using?
7. I do agree that changing fittings before matches (instead of during) is a different paradigm to BF3/COD etc. However I think adding the ability yo quick-restock and quick-edit on the spawn screen could alleviate this aspect. |

You can already change before and during a battle. In fact if you are fast enough you can change your fitting after you die, but before you choose your respawn point. I have done this multiple times over the weekend while trying out different capabilities of the Scout suit.
Heck, you can even hit the market during a match if you want.

1. It wouldn't hurt to be a little more obvious that you can't use a piece of equipment. I don't think it needs to go as far as a popup though.
2. The number of fits available (based on lowest quantity of fitted equipment) should be shown everywhere the fit name is listed. Also the ability to Restock from the fit selection screen at respawn would be nice.
3. Do what Eve does, optionally show claimed certificates and age of the character.
4. Run is a toggle - it doesn't need to be held. Control remaps would be appreciated though.
5. A jump-pack would need to be balanced. IMHO it should only be useful for scaling short walls and cliffs. When in the air it has little maneuverability and makes you an easy target. It works on short bursts and you take fall damage when coming back down.
6. Let's leave classes out of this. Skill suggestions via certificates and tutorials are the Eve way to go.
7. The game will ship with more default loadouts. Also, Eve has the ability to share fits so maybe this will make an appearance in Dust as well. If you don't want to take the time to improve your character via skills or fittings then that's your problem. |

1. Agreed.
2. While not stupid-proof, it is explained. You needed to buy more BPCs. If you run out of BPCs for any item in a saved fitting, the fitting becomes invalid.
3. Skill is a difficult think to pin down - K/D, W/L, and other such "skill"-based numbers are not an accurate measure when playing with randoms. There needs to be another way to show what kind of player you're up against/playing with.
4. Disagree. Most every modern shooter nowadays uses L3 as the sprint button.
5. [VGN].
6. Making skill-point assignment automatic would take away the customization that was promised.
7. CCP made it very clear this shooter was complex compared to others out there. The game is for a different kind of person; it doesn't have the wide-reaching appeal of Call of Duty or Halo.
