Okay so, summer is closer and closer, and as a result the days are getting warmer and warmer, so that means my PS3 will keep overheating sooner and sooner.
It overheats* after about 40 minutes of Dust gameplay (NO OTHER GAME HAS EVER OVERHEATED MY PS3).
This tells me that it's about friggin' time this game receives it's dose of optimization.
My PS3 is only 2.5 years old so I doubt it's the "thermal paste" or whatever it's called...
Limit framerate to 20, or change the engine to a better one, you have to do something, this is getting ridiculous.
*By overheat I mean the fan starts spinning extremely fast, eventually cooling the PS3 down quite nicely, but it never stops on it's own. |

Yeah i get the same heating problem and i live in Scotland, none of my other games do this just dust. Try sticking ps3 boxes or wooden bits under your ps3 so the bottom has more cooling. |

I don't have this problem when I play Dust.
My PS3 bloodcurdlingly protests if I put BF4 though...

if your ps3 sounds like a blow dryer its time to clean ALL the air vents. There are a lot. I use a paperclip to clean the dust out..... Hasnt happened since.... Was happening after an hour and never stopped. Flip ps3 over, dont even need to open it. Look around edges for dirt. Shoot some compressed air after you clean out channels. Good as new.

You shouldnt put the ps3's back stright next to a wall. Some other tricks are is to put blocks in shape of a square on the 4 edges underneath the PS3 so the air can better circulate. Ya know if the fan inside of the console keeps sucking the hot air in that it previously emitted then its just natural that the thing overheats.

Take it apart and CLEAN IT. Just a few screws, and plenty of guides if you can't figure it out.
I had a loud fan, took it apart, and immediately knew why. The amount of dust built up was quite amazing.
Got it cleaned and barely hear that fan turning.

Not good enough, gotta take it apart. This might get a small amount of dust out, but you HAVE to take it apart to get the build up off (especially those fans, it's caked on them). So vent slits aren't large enough to allow that built up dust to escape as you blow air in there.

Like others have said you will have to open it up and clean it. Especially the fans. You will be surprise at the amount of dust it can collect in 3 years. Once you clean it your ps3 will run noticeably quieter. For the big ps3 you will need a secutity tox bit I think its either a t-10 or a t-12. its only for 1 screw. Just you tube on how to open your ps3 . Note that you don't need to go all the way down to the motherboard but, you do need to take a couple of things out. If this is your first time doing this I suggest that before you remove a cable or a set of screws you take a picture. Then go to the next step and take another picture of where the cables where and the screws. It will help for when you put it back together. Also get a couple of containers and separate the screws by section. The screws are of different sizes so it saves a lot of hassle if you separate them based on where they go. A simple plastic cup with a label will suffice.
Opening and cleaning your ps3 is not hard. Just remember to touch the metal casing before touching anything inside. Touch the metal every now and then to discharge yourself from esd and you will be ok. Also, if you have access to compress air that is the best way to clean computers and game consoles. |
