I'm not exactly a rookie, but it's been about 18 months since I played the game. Back when I was playing, I mainly ran support; sniper, forge gun, and logi. I'm still getting used to the cloaked scout suits, but they haven't overtly affected my gameplay too much. HAVs are a different story. You can't kill the things. 4 shots to the face with a prototype forge gun and it's not even halfway through armor. Add to that the fact that they like to travel in groups and they're pretty much unkillable. Are there new tactics to beating them or is it just gg when the enemy has 3 deployed? |

Tanks are pretty grossly overtuned at the moment: A comparison true adamance made with me was that 'in 1.6 when av weapons had more damage and more range, a madrugar could have 6700 armor and 25% passive hardening or so. Which put it at the 10000 ehp mark. To skip a lot of the math, its armor repairer repped at 136.5hp/second for twelve seconds. Our current tanks have a little bit less EHP but they can repair >2x the amount permanently". Some of the more sensible vehicle users are likely going to be making a push for more EHP / less hardening and lower/longer rep times - you might not be able to kill a tank in a single go, but when you push it off the field it'll be gone for a bit longer. You might even actually at some point run into tanks that aren't in a binary state of 'full hp' or 'dead', but in a tertiary state of 'wounded and retreating' or a quaternary state of 'wounded and recovering'.
As it is AV grenades are prettymuch required.
I typically run a basic scout with nanohive, av grenade, swarm, magsec and proximity mines to continually harass tanks around the map. You will die but you'll also get reasonable chunks of WP too. You can later upgrade to advanced fits with proto swarms / proxies and grenades which will do more damage.

AV Scout: Swarm Launcher or Plasma Cannon Packed Remote Explosives (Place remote's on the tank before you initiate your attack.) AV Grenades Place remotes, Shoot with Swarm/Plasma Cannon, throw a grenade, shoot again, if your fire had not detonated your RE already, set them off when the tank is in armor.
AV Assault: Swarm Launcher or Plasma Cannon AV Grenades LAV with Shield/Armour modes to get into position.
With a Forge Gun or Plasma Cannon try to get the first shot in the rear (engine block). If you can't get behind them, then try for low on the treads. The belly of the Tank is weak too, if the tank is riding up on something and exposes its belly.
Turret Installations are much more effective for killing Tanks now. They aren't easy kills for Tanks anymore. They are more like tanks in their own right, except they can't move.
For best results, team up with at least one other form of AV.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

Double hardened/double rep tanks can out-rep forge guns, so don't expect to solo a tank unless its hardeners are cooling down, at which point it'll be headed to its redline or somewhere safe. that's when you strike.
Try to team up with a swarmer or plasma cannon user, or even a tanker, if you're going tank hunting. Solo, you're a distraction at best. Coordinated and you're a threat. I did this (teamed with a tank) and we got at least 7 tank kills between us in a PC vs proto tanks.

I'm not sure if I agree with the belief that HAVs are too toughened right now ("timing your attack" is a tactic not discussed enough). But your collective observations bring us back to a concept that I personally oppose, but (I admit reluctantly) CCP has succeeded in achieving with HAV encounters:
Their "Waves of Opportunity" concept. A vehicle is INTENTED to have the capacity and opportunity to be practically impervious for brief spikes of time---giving the operator a chance to bully her way into a situation, dole out lethal chaos and punishment, and then HAVE to leave as a way of evading enemy taking advantage of the moment when your "invulnerability spell" wears off.
CCP loves the idea. I hate the idea. (What player actually LIKES to keep visiting-n-leaving, visiting-then-leaving---I think most of us would rather keep slugging it out with an adversary till the victor is decided on OUR terms, not CCP's terms, of combat).
But I have to accept, that combat against HAVs has finally been fitted pretty well into that "Waves" concept in our current matches. Now, we can't allow ourselves to get to caught up in chasing that HAV and killing him----she's eventually going to go away anyway---we have to simply focus on finishing off the Objective Assault in the time between the HAV's visits.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
