Dust (and UE) has always been quality in the video department.
If it lacks, it's netcode -- the heart of what makes a FPS good, IMO.
Said a bit differently, the best looking game in the world isn't worth much if you can't get the dynamics of gameplay, like hit detection and lag compensation, correct.
If I were designing a game, that's precisely why I would not choose UE -- I've yet to see a truly good implementation FPS-wise.
Then again, I've never developed a game before, so what do I really know....
...but the video sure is impressive and I'd love to see Dust on a next gen console or PC using UE4.
Thanks for sharing. |

All i'm saying is if someone said Dust could go to ps4 if I were to punch my grandma in the face, I would strongly consider knockin out grams.

Honestly, the Engine doesn't really make the game and a feature demo is not really indicative of what something will do.
This is Unreal Engine 3's Trailer from 4 and a half years ago. Yes, Unreal Engine 4 looks leaps and bounds sexier and if I remember correctly that debugging tools for the developer are supposed to be equally as sexy (if you are into that kind of thing). Whether or not it was the company line, one of the developers of Valkyrie mentioned that Unreal 4 is helpful when working with the Oculus. It is almost certainly a better engine than Unreal 3.
However, how many games have really pushed what an Engine can do? We don't have "high quality depths of field", how is DUST's "color grading", haven't seen a "seamless time of day transition", "weather effects" in DUST are generally floating bits of red that constantly hit under my radar and make my eyes twitch over to it, I don't think we have "point light shifts", and I am just going to lay it out there: DUST has not made use of the "improved foliage rendering."
If you are trying to run Crysis on a Commodore 64, you are limited by the Engine. However, running Dungeon Keeper on Titan is not going to give a much different experience than my old laptop.
Again, not doing the Luddite thing with "why do we need better stuff? My DynaTAC makes calls just like your iPhone!" Advancement is fantastic but high performance gasoline is not going to make my 2003 Hyundai Elantra perform any better than basic unleaded. I think DUST is kind of in the same boat. I do remember hearing developers state that DUST is using a super heavily modified UE3 so moving to UE4 wouldn't be necessary/possible.

I agree with most of it, except for the last part.
If they are going forward with Legion on PC or eventually, PS4, it would be foolish to stick with UE3 as they are just going to limit themselves in the not to distant future.
As far as keeping it on the PS3, I see no reason to switch.

I wonder how it would look in Unity. Mmm. Would be cheaper to maintain, because of product rental fees, as opposed to Overall Income fees of Unreal Engine.
If microtransactions are your goal, UE 4 may not be a good fit.
