You're going to likely get a few answers from this one. The general consensus is that they don't, but I've noticed my basic knives do massive damage on my melee fit. I nearly one shotted a heavy once with a charged slash (Both connected, of course) but it was well over 700 damage on basic knives, something that should be impossible without a high proficiency and a Minmatar scout. I had neither at the time. Send in a help ticket for a solid answer though, because while I believe they do alter the damage, I don't know how they actually alter it, or by how much.

Edit: I believe they actually add the melee damage onto the slash.

1500 damage would actually be right around the threshold with a lv5 Minmatar Scout, three myofibrils, Ishukone Nova Knives and proficiency lv5 on the knives. Min scout boosts them to around 1000 with a charged double slash, then another 100+ damage from the proficiency skill, and then around 450 or so for the myofibrils.
