I am sure you are aware of how bad the Magsec is under-performing. I cannot speak as to exactly how much presence it has, but I have gone entire matches without seeing it in the kill-feed. A cursory glance at your metrics can confirm this. So I believe a balance pass on it is warranted.
Now let's look at what a sidearm is to do. A sidearm is a backup should your light weapon fail you for whatever reason (improper damage profile, heat buildup, etc.) Now sidearms can certainly be viable on their own, but their primary purpose is as a reserve. So let's look at how the SMG performs compared to the Magsec.
The SMG is the gold standard for sidearms for a reason: it is easiest to use out of all the sidearms. It has the lowest kick, easily manageable dispersion, and by simply pulsing the trigger you can negate a good majority of any increased kick. The MAgsec has horrendous kick almost from the get-go. The main time it is likely to be used is when an opponent has gotten to close range for the Rail Rifle to be viable. So let's have the Magsec catered to this situation: the enemy has gotten in close, and you switch to your Magsec in order to protect yourself.
1. Reduce charge time from 0.3 to 0.1 seconds. This allows it to apply decent damage to an enemy without cutting so deeply into sustained DPS. ie: once recoil becomes too great, there is less downtime between firing. IT also allows it's DPS to start being applied sooner, which is imperative when surprised and under attack. Jaysyn Larrisen suggested removing charge time completely, so you decide which would be better.
2. Reduce hipfire kick significantly. This weapon is designed for "CQC" combat, so reduced kick will allow it to better apply its limited DPS better, in addition to the reduced charge time. These two changes in conjunction will allow the Magsec to better complement it's racial playstyle of ranged combat by providing a better emergency backup for the long ranged rail rifle.
3. Optional. Reduce optimal to 35m. It should out-range the SMG, but we don't want it to become superior to the SMG by providing similar DPS at far greater ranges.
These 3 together will allow the Magsec to more easily handle opponents, and will therefore become a more viable option for mercs to choose. Hopefully we see its usage rise to decent levels with these changes.
Therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Looks to be slightly less desirable than Nova Knives and slightly more desirable than Ion Pistol: http://dust.thang.dk/market_historycategory.php (click sidearms)
But unlike the IoP and NKs, it does make an appearance in the Top 10: http://dust.thang.dk/market_tryhardinator.php

My main issues with the magsec are largely the 'ghost firing' bug, and with the fact that it has *so little* dispersion on hipfire.
As far as sidearms go its actually okay-ish on dps though I'm relatively certain it's on the lower end (336 at basic once spooled for .3sec). It's pretty long range which is nice, but I'd love to see either a little more dispersion on hipfire (its a snub-nosed automatic rail for gods sake and its rail length is even smaller than the bolt pistol! It should disperse more) or the bolt pistol sight it's modelled with actually present. I'm not sure if the suppressor it's modelled with should be a thing, that might make it a real terror (tactical magsec? For operators that operate in operations)

Also for a longer range sidearm, those bulky iron sights are just terrible.

I'm not sure why the regular SMG has such an amazing optic when the magsec has iron sights.

What? You dont like covering up 80% of what you're shooting at with the thing you're trying to use to use to aim at them?

Nope, I'm also not super fond of people being able to casually twitch out of my fire due to the gun being too accurate. But this comes after a long session of play where I managed to have ghost firing happen on arr, rr, magsec, bolt pistol and even the forge gun!
I don't like it when my guns don't work like they should and the idiot on the other end of the game feels like he's ****ing Neo because he can just herp and derp in roughly the same spot to avoid all my gunfire.

i doubt this would see any use, magsec is already quiet (and why would you WANT to muffle the sound of someone popping bubble wrap?) |

Yeah I just don't see anyone using that. If weapons fire contributed to your signature profile....sure, but I don't feel that any amount in sound reduction would merit a drop in DPS.

I track enemies by sound pretty much every match. Also tend to alert players / give away position when I'm being noisy ( :: pops uplink with shotgun :: ). Maybe its a different playstyle thing, but if the magsec performed better at range and had decent sights, I'd run a suppressed / weaker variant in a heartbeat.
Quietly poke one enemy, lure one enemy. Noisily poke one enemy, lure X enemies.
Different strokes for different folks. That's the beauty of offering a variant.

*shrugs* I mean sure some people would use it but I think it would end up being pretty underutilized. Not a bad idea per say but I'm kinda meh about it in general.

what i was saying is it would definitely not be worth a 25% damage penalty on an already pathetic gun.
2-3% less damage? sure. assuming the base magsec is worth a damn ofcourse. |
