Having started to write this I've realised it has become a wall of text so I'm apologising at the start but read on if you willGǪ..
I thought I'd share my experiences last night with the new matchmaking. Everyone else is doing it so why not me!
Quick bit of background. I've been playing about a year, casually, with no financial investment (so far). I have 20 odd million SP but have never run anything apart from the Gallente Starter Fits in that time. I therefore have quite a lot of ISK and my Starter suits are about as good as they can be without making any changes to them. Learnt very early it's pointless someone like me playing bush so just run dom and skirm picking up hacks and kills where I can away from the frontline. It's not an intense style of play but I enjoy it.
(Yes if it's obvious I'm going to get massacred no matter what I do, looking at you T.H.I.R.D R.O.C.K and Prima Gallicus, then I'll snipe or AFKGǪ.. I am a useless blueberry)
What is interesting is that before the new matchmaker kicked in I had a K/D of 1.04 and a W/L of 0.98, making me almost completely and utterly averagely bad in the world of Dust and in an interesting position when it comes to the new teambuilder and matchmaker.
Now on to the matchmaker. Last night started off very badly. First match, a skirmish, started 8vs16 (Hmmmmmm).
Of the 8 5 were clearly VERY new (in the sense that 3 of them suicided out of the MCC at the start and then spent the whole match just standing in front of and staring at the letters, not hacking anything etc) 3 of us were OK.
The opposition had a newish squad (all militia gear) who spent the whole match practicing transporting each other and doing HALO jumps from dropships onto the objectives with covering fire from a blaster tank. Mad props to them it was great to watch, they were fun to play against and very effective when there is only a couple of militia swarms to counter them. If separating players out a bit is going to allow more of this sort of gameplay without vets etc instagibbing everything in sight then I'm all for that battlefield variety.
The fly in the ointment was that also on that team there was a member of Prima Gallicus running all proto min assault with proto combat rifle. He went 65/0. Most people left, redlined, highest warpoints total on the losing side 600 highest on the winners 4500. Not a very auspicious start. Match ended 4vs14
Second match also lopsided 8vs14 but more balanced. Fun but never really a fight.
However the next 3 matches were really, really good. Some of the best I've had in the last year.
One Skirm and Two Dom. Most people in militia or standard with a smattering of Advanced and Proto. All three went to the last 10/20 clones and the last 3 or 4 bars of MCC health with plenty of back and forth on points and leaders.
They weren't all full matches and they weren't all even teams (at least not by the end) but they did seem pretty balanced. Everyone was ending the match with warpoints and kills were well distributed down the list. There were a couple of beasts on each team and a couple of obvious newberrys. Did I say it was fun?
Now the point of the earlier ramble about my history was because prior to these changes I was happy to go through a match 5/4, 3/2, get some assists, hacks, put some links out and maybe installation a few dropships. An end of match 6000SP was a good day.
However because of how things have been shuffled the last 3 matches I ended up with something like 10-14000SP. Have I become one of the horrible stompers? Is this what power feels like? Maybe at times yes but I was still dying in seconds to a militia AR to the back and as I said the kills and WP etc were pretty evenly distributed down through both the teams as you'd hope. Everyone was trying all the time and encountering a proto suit is a, "whoa sh*t!!!!" moment and not an, "Oh god not again," one. I did see the same three or four people quite a few times still implying that a bigger playerbase is needed but it's encouraging to see that there are actually genuinely new players out there.
I don't want this to sound like a I did gooder so now the game's good post though and it'll be interesting to see what happens as people start to get pushed up or down in the ranking list based on performance as I'd say that the above stats mean I'm probably over performing slightly. I know however going up to the bitter vets level I'm going to get pounded again. Maybe it's time to break out the better gear and see?
Again it was only one night and this is no real test. I'm sure that there will still be bad games and stomps, as arguably there should be, but hopefully it is a good start and I look forwards to trying to get a couple of games in over the weekend to see if this is borne out. |

T\L DR When the teambuilder/matchmaker worked last nigh it was really good. There are still a few kinks to work out around team numbers and what happens when people leave during the battle and if someone ends up in the 'wrong' tier they are going to be able to absolutely clean house, but I think/hope that things are on the right track. In the good matches things certainly didn't seem quite as daunting for the really new players as before, but we'll have to hear from them to know. As a middle of the road casual I had a good time.
What did I learn? There still needs to be a much better tutorial for new players around game modes, hacking objectives, uplinks, use of supply depots, weapons etc. Although all the frontline suits now have uplinks few people seemed to use/ be aware of them. Very few of the lower ranked players seem to run in squads. There are actually quite a few new players still. The Militia Assault Scrambler Rifle wrecks. SP investment really does make a difference. A Proto suit without all proto modules and a proto weapon isn't nearly as scary as one with. If only one person in the match has skilled into and figured out how the mass driver works they can completely dominate the domination point on the train map. Without proto vets etc hanging over the battlefield more styles of gameplay seem to occur. There was more dropship transportation, tank support, snipe and counter snipe going on. Useful installations weren't insta killed at the start of matches and actually proved useful and dangerous for both teams. The slightly higher TTK of everyone was fun.
Did you actually read all of this? You must be having a slower day at work than me!! have a good day and maybe see you on the battlefield |

I have too much faith in the DUST community to dare assume that protostompers will squad up with 5 alts to get into the lower elo brackets.
No, this could never happen, we're all self-respecting, KDR-ignoring, fun-seeking, new-player-retaining veterans here.
This must just be my over-active imagination again, surely.
