I know that the Local chat we are al using in DUST is the same they have in EVE Online. It allows us to communicate with the people in the same start system.
I suspoect that when we go fight across the various systems in new Eden we are Clone Jumping in some fashion to these location since we do not have ships. That or we are taking our new War barges now to go fight in these other systems.
Will we ever get the ability to change what system it is we find our DUST mercs in when we go back to our rooms in between battles?
The room type we are in is determined by the race we choose, because it puts us in a station of that races type. It would be nice first of all to be able to choose a new system from the star map to reside in. It would let us choose quarters we find more accommodating, and maybe even let us change the system we like to call home.
This could allow corps to use certain systems as a home, and invite people to come and chat in their home system. Some groups like Dust University could declare a system to help new players to the game. Maybe even one with many new EVE players to introduce them to the connection between the two games. It could broaden the connection between the two games as DUST mercs are seen in more places, and even to move from time to time.
Maybe you would want to restrict this to High sec, and or Low Sec. Maybe Sov could be restricted to only those within that SOV holders alliance. Maybe it would benefit SOV holding alliances to have DUST mercs able to sit in a system and report other EVE pilots they see show up in Local...
There are a lot of possibilities and reasons to want this. I do not think it would be difficult to add. Plus it greatly adds to the immersion, and new possibilities for help in the new player experience. |

Anyone else think of any other possibilities with being able to change local? Is there any downsides? |

This is another example of New Eden's geography (and it's player's location within it) being critical to the overall experience.
All Mercs currently 'reside' in their home racial Faction's High Security Space (1.0 - 0.5) with a few minor exceptions (unintentional errors I believe that might place a Merc in another Faction's Highsec station)
No Mercs reside in Low Security or Null Space, although FW and PC Battles take place exclusively in Low Sec. (0.4 - 0.1)
There is the whole 'travel' issue battle to battle and whatnot, but I'm sure that'll be made as workable as it can be via 'Warbarge Floatillas' and other PC changes coming up.
I agree it would be productive for Mercs to be able to pick and choose their Corporate Office locations (presumably similar to EVE proceedures) and encourage their players to move there and recruit and whatnot, but realistically there is no advantage to moving Mercs outside of HighSec locations.
New Mercs would still spawn in HighSec, so there goes the recruitment argument. There are no Corporate Offices, only wallets and soon 'warbarge floatillas' (presumably mobile, definitely not visible on the NE map as far as other inhabitants are concerned.) There is no reason to move Merc Quarters since mercs jump from battle to battle risk and fatigue free.
Dust currently contains no means by which to allow the Geography of New Eden to impact it (and vice versa) beyond determining the general location of a battle type outside of the upcoming PC changes (of which I know very little).
