A good friend of mine worked there, and he said the same thing.

there's no shame in any job these days.. sometimes i get down on myself as a line cook but then i remind myself i'm not cleaning toilets or doing dishes or staring at cragslist all day. i would rather be welding tho but i remind myself that any job now is valuable.. the US economy is still pretty fuct.. and look at it this way a banked corp like KFC probably isn't going to cut you early on a slow day like they do in a family business. learn all you can when the opportunity presents, that's where i fuctup at i was not willing to learn when the economy was good. we turn away applicants daily some with college degrees and we're a resturant- i still fail to spell it right. |

i had a job as a hotel van driver but my unfortunate side duty was unclogging guest toilets.. whenever i think i mis remind myself of that job i just remind myself of the toilets.. whenever a tour bus pulled in it was toilet night- they dont **** for days and then once they get in their rooms an average of 5 toilets gets overloaded.. towards the end of that job i was just knocking on guest door and leaving toilet plunger to answer- i would then be seen running off down the hallway. |

Oh yeah, we can seriously get fired if we accidentally pull the skin off when we take them out of the fryer.

Working at fast food restaurants ruins the tasty magic. Not that I'd know personally. Peasants!!! It's just like how you don't go to work at Disney parks and meet the crackheads behind the Mickey Mouse outfits. |

No, I do not, but several people I know who do would be gathering a riot on KFC for some **** that's happened.

Fortunately no though I have worked in a variety of restaurants and coffee houses since I was roughly 14...... some of the stuff you'll see is disgusting such as cleaning the deep-friers.

high volume dishwashing is pure depravity.. it's ok for a couple weeks but after a couple months it becomes very depressing. a lot of places treat them like sub humans which can drive a man to drink.. they work the hardest out of the whole store and are usually payed minimum.. they are slave of the kitchen and any oppression from the top trickles down the chain to the dish guy..
i was a very angry dishwasher, drinking a pint of vodka to get thru my shifts and deal with people's attitudes. i used to spray waitresses on "accident" a couple times a week. it was a freaking terrible life. i ended up with a kidney stone because after the pint of vodka during the day i would switch to redbull and vodka at the bar at night. i was gut rotted.
i found a chef that finally gave me a chance on the line. a cook didn't show up one day and i just stopped doing dishes and went and worked the line, i basically forced my way onto it. there like ok, your a line cook now...
if we rock a serious rush sometimes a pint of beer just appears at my station, i'm like oh i guess this is mine. if you become distracted by the pain of a burn you can ask for a shot of tequila or dip into the lime/tequila mix that we saute our shrimp in but it's cheap tequila and nothing you want to over indulge in.. it's a very ruff buzz and usually followed by a headache.
kitchens are great when you are treated like a pirate. the chef and a few other cooks have all been in jail before. it took a lot of work to gain my respect amongst them as the rookie cook who's never served time. i had to reciprocate as much as possible even tho i hated it. i also had to stand my ground at the right times. timing was everything.
i'm the grease guy and i deal with all the traps. i found something to do that everyone avoids and hates to deal with but it's now just routine to me and raises my value. when ever i get down i just remind myself i'm no longer cleaning toilets or dealing with peoples backwash. the bad economy and long spells of unemployment in between dish jobs evolved my work ethic. i now care about more that goes on than just getting thru the shift. |

The way it works here is there is one cook who also does everyone's dishes and does all of the cleaning (floors walls tables and grease traps) in the store. It sucks ass because everyone's always waiting on me at the end of the day to finish the pile of dishes that they didn't bother to bring over until 10 minutes before the shift ends

yea i hate that crap where they all want to leave 30 minutes early and then act like it's your fault because there's still work left to do.. i know that's a tough position to be in. sometimes the best approach is just to stone wall them with long blank stares. |
