As you may have read in other threads CCP Hillmar, the CEO of CCP, said that Dust514 is now profitable for CCP.
http://www.polygon.com/2015/3/20/8263823/playstation-3-exclusive-dust-514-is-now-a-profitable-game-for-ccp
Now, how is it that it is profitable while it wasnt before? We now have a smaller player base so you could think Dust is earning less moneys but apparently it is now profitable like it has never been.
Now a game is profitable if gains>costs (duh!)
So what changed? More gains due to the introduction of respecs, apex suits and other things? Or CCP limiting the costs of paychecks firing people and so having less employees working on Dust?
I think the answer is a mix of both. So there is not too much to be happy cause it shows that CCP is not going to invest many resources on Dust.
Now, since we love this game and we want it to be REALLY profitable for CCP, so they start thinking about investing more in it, what should we do? What should CCP do to increase the gains of the game?
Find new ways to make players spend moneys on the game (while not make it a pay2win). CCP has already done a good job.
Find new players and make them want to stay, keep playing and spend moneys.
The second point is the most important, in my opinion, and is the one CCP should work on.
In The artiche CCP Hillmar says that we have "Thousands of players joining every single day". While I cant believe this to be true I'm sure there are a lot of players that joins the game and leave it forever after a couple of days.
CCP has to work hard on NPE and we have to help on this topic, share your ideas on how to improve NPE to make Dust more profitable.

Port it to a platform with no hardware limitation and where they don't have to wait for every patch getting tested by another company and where they could also offer a testserver.

The article fails to answer when we started being profitable; unfortunately I don't think I am allowed to say when and for how long we been there just that it is and has been for some time there and we're slowly working our way through things and investments.

Lemme help you out, since I don't have an NDA.
It's because the Legion team is on a different budget, and the Dust team is a skeleton crew. Lower upkeep means greater profit.
Did I do good? Do I get a cookie?
But really, regardless of the fact CCP is largely juking the stats to appear profitable, I would be interested in knowing how much more money they have made since the inclusion of triple stacked boosters, whale farming strongbox mechanics and the warbarge feeder.
Usually banned for being too awesome.

- port Dust 514 as it is to PS4,
- give it higher display/texture resolutions (possibly less frame rate drops),
- make it cross-play with the PS3 client (which is technically possible),
- keep adding features until we hit a brickwall with the PS3 client,
- then phase out the PS3 client,
- and start adding features that you really couldn't have done with the PS3's hardware.
This would give us an immediate and long term future for 'Mercs On The Ground'Gäó, the entire team could work on the same product, noone gets left behind (for now).

Spend some money to marketing and before they do that, make the NPE better.
- raise the base SP of new players to 1.5-2mill - longer academy - better matchmaking for solo new players |

What ever CCP does going forward, posting DUST to any other platform before fixing the - mechanics/glitches/bugs/incomplete systems/lack of social tools/lack of squad tools/lack of good game modes/meaningful FW/meaningful PC - would be stupid beyond words.
Rattati's next goal is going to be increasing the player base. Big question is whether he's going to try and do that without fixing what's wrong with the game. There are a lot of cheezy ways to retain new players, after all: if you can make them hang around for three weeks instead of three hours or three days the you can ostensibly demonstrate better retention/profitability while at the same time fixing nothing that is truly wrong with the game.
My personal roadmap would be:
1) Focused on new player orientation/education into Dust's systems - peeps might know how to 'shoot a gun', but only knowing how to shoot a gun will get you killed pronto in Dust. This may cost real money, CCP: you've been trying to avoid investing in a quality NPE for three years now - it doesn't work.
2) We need to find a way to keep peeps in the same pub matches while giving all players a good experience, if possible. The long term value of social integration is too valuable to New Eden to give it up without a fight. My preferred solutions for keeping the population together in pubs are:
- Make the TACNET a deployable & remove shared scans from squads in pubs only. Shared scans are a massive power multiplier for protovet stomp squads, prolly a bigger power multiplier than passive skills of proto gear. Would actually like to see a PC strategic resource that was necessary for deployment of a TACNET in PC.
- Put a gear metalimit on squad members - doesn't have to be harsh, just enough to take the edge off what new players face in pubs. Vets will still have their passive bonus advantage after all. Proto is for FW/PC.
- MAG-style squad comms/overlay the value of this to Dust & new players is blatantly obvious.
- Reward noobs with a mu/meta ratio wp boost for their kills/assists.
3) Give players better/more fine-grained/educational post-match statistics. Use it as a covert teaching tool to show new players how to earn warpoint and win matches.

This. Or IWS is saying that Dust was already profitable before the player base started dropping, now that is is dropping the profit is less than before but still exists.
Either of the 2 my points stand:1 we want Dust to be more profitable so it sees more investment on it 2 to increase gains CCP has to improve NPE to increase playerbase.

DUST started being profitable shortly after it was removed from the CCP R&D budget and income analysis began rolling in. It took from the separation from R&D until the decision was made to re-introduce actual patches for the trend to be solidly confirmed.
This isn't hard to figure out.
Hint: LEGION is the one running on the R&D slush fund right now.
