TLDR at bottom.
Warbarge upgrades of any type require warbarge components, the primary source for these being the warbarge factory which produces components at a fixed rate over time.
Logic would dictate that if you increase the rate of component production you decrease the wait time between warbarge and system level upgrades. However, in practice it would seem the OPPOSITE is true.
Take my current situation for example: My warbarge is at level 4 and my factory is at level 3 and I am considering which I should upgrade first. Assuming I have depleted my component reserve, I start with 0 components.
To upgrade my warbarge to level 5 requires 6385 components (cmp hereafter). At level 3 my factory produces 400 cmp per day; so it will take 16 days to produce the needed amount, over two weeks, which is a bit longer than I would like to wait. If I upgrade my factory to level 4 I can produce 500 cmp per day and cut down that wait by 4 days. I find this favorable.
However, to upgrade my factory from level 3 to level 4 requires 25334 cmp That is 4 times the amount needed to upgrade my warbarge as a whole to five; 63 days wait time!!! To reduce warbarge upgrade wait time by 4 days I have to ADD TWO MONTHS to that wait time; 75 days in all , in which time my warbarge remains stagnant.
Moreover, it means two months for the factory to feed itself enough cmp to increase output by a measley 100 cmp per day; a rate at which it will take 254 DAYS before the factory has produced enough additional cmp for that investment to have payed for itself.
Thus it has become clear to me that upgrading the component factory from level 3 to 4 is not worth the time investment until such time as the warbarge and all its other systems have been upgraded to the point at which their next level requires a wait time greater than the required component production wait time plus 63 days. That is a looooooooooooong time off. And if you regularly acquire experimental gear or use any other system that may consume cmp to procure benefits; even longer. And then factor in cool down time management.
Any wait that long is no longer worth the effort, the warbarge as well.
(And then there is component factory upgrade from 4 to 5 )
---TLDR: Warbarge component factory upgrade cost is borked Don't bother with Factory level 4 unless you get very lucky salvage or spend piles of aur. Why CCP, why?

Disclaimer: I have NO PROBLEM with CCP monetizing this game and tolerate any and all means by which they promote it.
And I wasn't really asking why, it was just some silly snark at the end. The reason is self evident.
However, even spending aur will get pricey. I can buy 10k aur for 5 USD and bump the factory real quick. But how much to get to level 5? Ten dollars? And then the next? There will come a point where the only means to quicken the pace of upgrades is through the influx of real world cash and the returns again will diminish as the cash requirements steadily increase.

For the very same reason as the OP, I'm not upgrading my factory from 3 to 4. They RoI is simply too far out to make it feasible. |

I like to first point out that the Warbarge is merely for passive gains only just like Planetary Interaction in Eve Online. It's one of those setup-n-forget kind of features from what I see.
Second, there are multiple ways of acquiring Warbarge Components such as regular salvage drops, strongboxes, and even the occasional Daily Missions.
But I'll be fair to you, OP. You are correct that the process of upgrading the Warbarge and its features needs a complete rework. It may have looked like a good idea on paper to CCP at first, but in practice it's not looking like a good idea anymore. To have to devote a little over two months just to upgrade from level 3 to 4 is just too much. The annoying part is that this is not even upgrading the Mobile Factory to max level yet. If this was for max level, I might understand. But even then, the returns don't seem worth it.
But overall, let's all not forget that what we see here is actually Phase 1 of the Warbarge feature. So we may see further adjustments to WC requirements later on once Warlords 1.1 comes around.

I am in the exact same position as the OP, warbarge at 4, factory at 3.
I'm actually levels 3,2,3,2 if that makes sense.
I'm holding off on the experimental weapons factory or whatever it's called bc I don't really use officer weapons and since it requires components to claim, once you start down that road the rest of your warbarge growth is done.
I'm about 25 days out from having 25,000 components to either upgrade the component factory or damage increase.
The problem is the upgrades take so long without spending anymore Aur, and how much time does the game have left?
I don't want to start a discussion on that, but it certainly influences my decision making on where to spend the components, tending to shy away from the long term and wiser areas to shorter term.

I think they should let you queue what you want your components for. If you are upgrading, the components automatically go toward that upgrade without having to claim them every 2 days.
All in all I think the way the warbarge works will get tweaked as more modules are added. If not, they should just use the time elsewhere. We are talking years to get the modules we have now upgraded. |

I agree with this or something similar. I only get to play once, maybe twice a week and this makes the time between claiming adding much overflow and lost components. My warbarge will never grow at this rate.

Here is the thing. The player base isn't growing. With the sharp climb to be any good in the game and no one willing to invest time to train and guard the noobs, they are dropping. So CCP needed something for the vets with isk wallets in the billions and 50+ million lifetime SP. A respec maybe, but anything more than that needed something else to keep them spending aurum. Hence components that slowly feed to a small growth element that has value to vets. It is doing what it is supposed to.
I can't wait for phase 2.
Now to start shotgunning and REing again, everyone will love this play style. Face Palm!

My main is on the slow grind. 400 wbc a day getting my "core" skills up and saving for the next level. Damage seems useful. Got it to 3 %
Isk and sp isn't worth it. Level 1.
My alt is on fast track producing stuff right now. (Claim 1 a day)
You can receive officer dropsuits at level 0. Why make more when my wb factory can't support it. Player trading hopefully works out. Either way I feel good with my choice.
The jump in wbc to level up is kind of crazy. 300 level 1. Level 5. Keep it. I don't want it.
