I knew I went overboard when I built my rig but the "average" gaming build really surprised me.

lol @ more cost effective. The uses of a PC and the ability to build specifically within your budget destroys consoles. There is also a far better used parts trade with PC components that make building a rig within your budget even easier.
There are even pre built machines that can run most PC games at medium settings available cheaper than the PS4 and you can upgrade those as you feel like it just like a normal PC.

In just a few minutes I was able to throw together a machine that would fall just above the middle stats on that chart for $412 not including a mouse and keyboard or an hdmi cable to hook it up to your tv.
Total my gaming mouse and basic keyboard cost about $70 so if you got those the total price is under $500.
So for the price of a PS4 and one game you can basically have a mid level rig with access to hundreds of free games and thousands of games in total compared to the ps4 which will give you a couple hundred games at best which mostly consist of ports from ps3 and PC. |

thats great at all, but joe blog off the street will not know how to build his own PC, nor will he want to, dont get me wrong i love PC gaming, but i totally get why people get consoles, and the core part of it is, they are just vastly simply to use and maintain in every possible way :P
i have tried many many times to get my mates to build their own PCs and frankly not one of them was interested, the covo always came down too. "or i could just buy a xxx and get everything i want..."

While they are still slightly lower end setups than I would like to see, the "Steam consoles" are taking care of this problem.
An example
They really are lower end specs but some parts of them can be upgraded and best of all it provides a way for people like you are referring too an avenue to really try out PC gaming on their own terms.
The size, noise levels, and flexibility of that thing are pretty incredible. |

When you go to PC gaming, you don't go there to play the mostly crappy free games. You buy/build a gaming PC to experience games in a higher fidelity, to play them smoother than on console (assumigh its a multi platform title) or to enjoy those badass PC only games.
$500 won't do u ANY good...I built my PC by itself, no monitor or accessories for $1200 in early 2013. Sure, I was able to run any game maxed out at a nice smooth 60FPS. But not long after, especially now where I see those new games coming out and my PC is starting to show age already. I'm not able to enjoy max settings and 60FPS anymore.
My point is, if you're on a budget, and can only spend $500 on a gaming PC, you're better off going with a console like the PS4 because it will offer you reliable gaming for years to come. My $1200 PC showed age after just 2 years. A $500 PC will be TRASH after 2 years.
PC gaming in my opinion is for the hardcore dedicated gamers not on a budget. PC requires constant upgrades and its expensive to maintain at a high level. Sure it IS and will ALWAYS be the best gaming platform. But it comes at a price. Consoles are affordable, and dont require upgrades and offer lower quality gaming. It's all about your preference and budget. |

You've just explained why mobile is eating the bottom out of the console market. Yet, PC's will always be on top. Sooner or later, there will be no consoles, just PCs, and mobile.

I can agree and disagree. Yes PC tends to need constant upgrades but they are far from required. PC games are getting better and better at making their graphics settings friendly to any type of setup.
I play Eve on my old laptop with the settings turned down or on my PC that I have spent over $3k on and have a good time either way. I also have a friend that plays BLR with me on his 3 year old laptop with the settings on medium. All I am saying is do not be fooled by the lifecycle of a low end gaming rig. If you look at the stats I posted in depth you will see that the average steam user is on a PC that is 4-5 years old. |

I guess if u put this way, then maybe. I just never found PC to be fun when you're playing on low-med settings with a not very good frame rate. And then you get games like the upcoming Star Citizen where you'll just need a beast of a rig to enjoy it anyway, it won't run on old machines.
What I'm trying to say is, consoles are cheap and affordable alternative, and offer similar experience if not better than lower end PCs.
Personally, I own a PC and a PS4, and I enjoy playing on them equally. If you're a gamer, you game, doesn't matter what platform as long as you're having fun.

"Current gen" consoles are a complete cash grab.
Based off AMD cpu and gpus, cant even run 1080p in 60 frames/s.

Games are about gameplay, always have been and always will be. The slickest graphics in the world will not save a game that has fundamentally flawed gameplay. Similarly, bad graphics can be ignored if the game play and experience of said game is top notch.

15 frames/s does not make a game good. Real gamers use powerful hardware.
