My trusty PS3 has given up the ghost.
By which I mean, took it apart to clean and now the TV isn't friends with it anymore.
And this is why I was always told to leave the DIY jobs to men-types *facepalm*
Good luck with the killing things, everyone! |

As an Electrical Engineer, I might be able to help you. Also how and what did you disassemble? Please be specific.
Alternatively, take it to a repair shop.
A screwdriver to disassemble, and vacuumed the fan I added after I removed that, then used a cloth to wipe the inside.
I didn't even take it all apart - I just took the top of the unit off, and removed a few screws so I could pull everything up a bit and get inside.
I have a few other broken ones at home I can get the ylod sorted on, just sucks I'm with the parentals for a few days D: |

My man box contains screw drivers from Christmas crackers. I'm pretty sure they aren't magnetic. (do screwdrivers usually have magnets in?!) |

(do screwdrivers usually have magnets in?!) No, but if you attach a magnet to a screwdriver, it tends to stay magnetic for a while (made good use of this taking things apart in the past.) Also, it was nice knowing you... The feminisms will dispose of you and swiftly replace you with a robot that constantly apologises for having ever said... How on earth does one attach a magnet to a screwdriver?! Maybe I should take up a course in DIY rather than looking after sprogs - apparently there's a lot about the world I don't know!
I was also told girls should never play pew-pew-pew games (I embarrass my mother in that respect), so I think I'm allowed to be sexist about the DIY. None of the girls I know are any good at it. In fact, I'm one of half a dozen females I know who can actually change a lightbulb without someone holding their hand. |

I'm pretty sure my screwdrivers aren't actually magnetic. They are the cheapest types you can get. I think I've broken about half a dozen over the years. But I'm totally going to find a magnet in the morning and test this! |

The TV that is, for a while my TV wouldn't recognize my PS3 through the HDMI cable and I ended up unplugging my TV for a minute or so. Plugged it back in and yay it worked but then my power supply died like a week later on that PS3.
I swear I tried it 3 times before deciding I'd lost the battle.
But yup, removing the HDMI cable and plugging it back in again did the trick!
Who needs magnetic screwdrivers? |

But I'm totally going to find a magnet in the morning and test this! Since you did say they came out of a cracker... If your screwdriver is plastic, this isn't going to end well for any of us. On a more useful note, I was always told to touch tools and hands against a radiator (or something grounded) to remove static... If your screwdriver is statically charged it could damage something... But I've almost never done this, it should be fine unless you go poking at the circuit board with it anyway.
Yeah, I'm not big on tools so my man box is a hodge-podge of things I've acquired over the years. I don't even own one of the screwdrivers you need for the screws on a Playstation. I just use a flat one.
Does it matter what kind of radiator? Is it the heat, or something else that removes the static? Does it matter if it's a gas or electric heater? And yes, I realise that this is probably a stupid question too. |

now directly putting a magnet on your hdd is a different story

It's nothing to do with it being a heater, just down to something being metal and grounded (I'm not that great with these things, I just picked up what I can from my bro who works with 'electrical crud'.) But like I said, I haven't bothered doing this in years of pulling my PS3 or the controller apart and they still work (well the controller does, the PS3 went all ylod on me many months after I last pulled it apart.) The main thing he said was just not to go poking at any of the chips. Correct its just the act of grounding that's important. I work in electronics and some of our boards are more sensitive than others but ESD straps are always required, though rarely used outside of my department. We spend all this effort protecting the boards during inspection or repair but then they go to the assembly floor and all of our effort goes to waste as nobody there seems to bother with the ESD strap.
Literally none of that makes sense to me. But I never object to sticking my hands on radiators so I will gladly turn mine on for a few minutes next time I get someone else to operate on my Playstation :P (which will need to be very, very soon - it's now running even louder than before, and I can hear it over the top of my hair dryer) |

Anywho, there are a few things that are better off dirty than they are clean, oddly enough. I've never understood why.
The inside of my ps3 isn't one of those things. It gets angry and growls at me when I try playing dust! |

Pretty sure it was a hdmi port issue. Pulling it out and in and wriggling has fixed it for now, so I think it will cope with 1 match a day til someone more qualified with a screwdriver can look at it. |
