There have been so many threads on suggestions how to handle the shield rep tool, but I've never seen any of them with any sort of agreement on how it should work. I was browsing the Big Board of Things when I saw shield rep tool was a thing on there, so it got me thinking on this and made me want to make one more thread on the subject.
My first thought was, what does the armor repair tool do? It repairs, obviously, but more importantly it makes up for one of armor's largest downfalls, slow repair. Armor is inferior to shields in the regeneration department, until you put a core focused rep tool from a Minlogi on an armor tanker, then you are repping at roughly 3 times the rate of a lot of shield tankers. So it ends up being better than shields at shield's own game.
I thought some more on that, and figured that should mean that shield's repair tool equivalent should make shields better than armor at its own game - buffer. If armor rep tools makes armor better than shields at regeneration, then the shield rep tool will make shields better than armor at buffering.
Overshield tool, heals people slowly in comparison to armor rep tool, but continues to heal beyond their maximum HP pool. Some preliminary numbers:
STD Overshield Tool- Reps shields 20/s, Goes 30% beyond target's maximum shields, 15m range. ADV Overshield Tool- Reps shields 25/s, Goes 40% beyond target's maximum shields, 15m range. PRO Overshield Tool- Reps shields 30/s, Goes 50% beyond target's maximum shields, 15m range.
If the person holding the overshield tool stops lock on, the shields drop 5/s until they normalize. The target's natural shield regen does not work past his/her natural shield HP.
There, that's my argument. If the discussion still gets nowhere, I can at least say I tried.

I could be mistaken, but I believe they work the same way that vehicle shield boosters used to work.
You have a duration for the shield booster, say 30 seconds, and there is a pulse at a certain interval, say 5 seconds. The pulse heals a certain amount of shields, let's just say 100 for the sake of this explanation. If you activate this shield booster, for the next 30 seconds, every 5 seconds will give you 100 shields, at the end of the duration, you will have regenerated 600 shields.

as for shield reps, it works similar to armor reps in eve. Drain a bunch of capacitor to restore some shields in small intervals. Though not sure whether they can implement it well in Dust since we have no capacitor but instead stamina that is used for sprinting.
On the other hand i'd like the overshielding idea. Though I can't imagine that it will be well received to have a heavy with 2 logis (one armor the other shield reps). It may just end up breaking that combo more unless something like stamina is used in order to rep. |

make it like a light shield booster that we have on vehicles... Except with a charge. equipment charges over time after use, fire it at someone > shields boost and start their own regen again.
I'd rather not have more 'lock and follow' equips in the game... That would just mean 2 logi's per heavy. |

Just a thought with your mention of buffering. What about a shield rep tool that applies resistance to shield damage? Instead of adding more shield or increasing its recharge rate, the shield becomes stronger. It's still a defacto ehp buff. I also really like your browser overcharge idea. |

There are definitely threads on this subject, I posted one personally years ago if you want to go searching the depths of the feedback and suggestions black hole ... I mean ... forum :)
But still, +1 for the thought and for the idea. I dont care where it comes from just get me a freaking shield based rep tool already!!
EDIT: I can't say I agree with the whole "overshield" part of it... lets just start with regular shield rep tool that lets me recharge peoples shields to 100% just like armor repper. If that works we can think about crazier ideas moving forward. Crawl first. Then walk. Then run. :) |

Transporter. One common shield with people x distance from you. Cloak cycle and mechanics shorter time long cool down huge CPU/pg drain for fairness. 10 second I win button broken by flux
Mobile regulator. Nanohive with regulation buff bonus same stats as current regs. Chews thru nanites high bandwidth.

Yeah I am all for that but the pragmatist in me says thats going to get OP fast... Rep tool is already beast mode in the hands of a good user if you throw shield repping onto same tool at same rate people just going to be crying left and right about God Mode Heavy/Logi combo. No thanks. Two separate tools please. |

yup it works in the same way as a rep tool but drains a lot of the ship using the shield reppers capacitor, unless you're using a basilisk.
Perhaps vehicle specific reppers in DUST could work similar to an active scanner/cloak field with a limited 'charge' that has to recharge before repairing again. then it stops being too OP
