I see tons of objects with Meta level 1, 2 etc... but I still don't know what is it for.
Always report to tomorrow what you can do today, because you might not have to do it anymore tomorrow.

Basically, it is a level value for items.
At this point it makes little difference, but in the future, game modes could be restricted to a meta cap of some kind, in which case they would become much more relevant.

It is your level or gear, for instance take dropsuits. The Assault M-1 is meta level 1, better known as Standard.
Take the Assault M/1-Series, this is the next step up in gear. It is meta level 3, two levels up from the previous level, also known as Advanced.
Then the Assault mk.0, it is meta level 7, also known as Prototype.
This method works across all dropsuits and has a similar pattern for weapons, albeit weapons are a little different, with weapons the specialized weapon of that tier will be one meta level higher. For instance the Assault Combat Rifle will be Meta level 2 even though it is the same tier as the Combat Rifle which is Meta level 1.

For weapons, not considerably. The Assault Combat Rifle is not better than the Combat Rifle, it is just different. I like to think of meta levels as how rare something is. 30-Day Boosters have high meta levels, as do BPO's and prototype gear.
That scout you see on the kill board with 20 kills and 15 deaths
