Sometimes I see vehicles deployed nowhere in the vicinity of a supply depot (at least I think).
Is this possible, and if so, how? |

You can call vehicles in using your d-pad. Press right and a menu will pop up. One of the options is vehicles.
That being said, know that where you are standing may not always be able to have a vehicle come in. The menu and the voice over will tell you if you are not in a suitable location to call in your vehicle (like underground).
Some maps are also glitchy and even though you're in a wide open field, it still won't let you call a vehicle in. Just keep moving around until it does accept it if that's the case.
EDIT: Also, try not to call yours in right next to your teammates. I've seen friendly RDVs ram into other incoming RDVs or drop their vehicle on a friendly vehicle yet to move. Don't be that person.

Lee Corwood has given you TOP-EXCELLENT advice and instruction, Anahiem.
You have the power in your menu to call an RDV to decloak and drop a vehicle to you wherever you are. Use that power THOUGHTFULLY:
Pick big-open spots on mostly flat ground to deliver your vehicle--not because of your vehicle's size, but because of the RDV that's bringing it---it's a Caldari-design whale with very little intelligence programming--the corners of buildings make it nervous enough to not want to lower itself down enough or not drop your vehicle at all!
A nice big building nearby is always a good way to cover your delivery from enemy potshots, but don't stand too close it when you order your vehicle.
Don't deliver a vehicle right under the MCC's area---players jumping from the MCC will collide with your delivery and die---other players won't give a darn and will call in their RDVs in exactly that same area, and the Caldari RDV isn't smart enough to take evasive action.
And above all, CAREFULLY DECIDE before you call in a vehicle-drop. Your delivery gets noticed by Advanced players like me right away, it tells us what vehicle you called in, where you are on the map, and we often decide to come after you before your vehicle has even finished delivering.  Deploy a vehicle ONLY when you can get in right away and move out fast. Against good opponents, every second counts.
