So i havnt really seen a thread about it so thought id start one. I know a hell of alot of people are crying for the party system currently. Myself included. From what i have heard from devs chatting in IRC however, we cant expect to see this until later in development, closer to the official release of DUST514.
Sooooooooooo...... Im guessing/hoping this means its not fully developed, and finalised yet. Why? Cos it means we can help make sure CCP do it right the first time, rather than having them dump something on us we all hate and them taking years to iterate on it!!!
So i know we are all screaming for it so we can REALLY start testing stuff, but let's be patient, and contribute some ideas of what we would like to see when it comes to the party system and comms, and their management. Becaause this is an incredibly important thing, totally differant in functionality to how we use comms on in fleet fights on eve.
With eve we have anything from 10 to 100's or more on comms at once. But they dont all need to be talking, there is channel command for the high ups to chat, and apart from that all the grunts get to hear is FC commands telling them when to push F1 / jump and some comms chatter from scouts etc.
But when it comes to a FPS game like DUST514 this obviously just wont do. First of, you are not going to have PS3 players all able to get on TS etc, people will be using PS3 comms primarily, though not exclusivly i can gurantee. Regardless the PS3 comms, chat and party system managment has to be solid, quick and easy to use.
So just a couple of my simple minded ideas, but maybe some others would like to expand on the type of functionality they would like to see when it comes to comms etc.
Chat: We know pretty much for certain that eve and dust players will be sharing channels such as corp/alliance chat, But in terms of chat actually in DUST I would personally like to see a chat window in game while in battle, personally i think theres plenty of room on the hud to put one in that could have a few tabs for corp alliance etc. UI scaling option aswell btw maybe? Maybe thats just the eve player in me missing my chat windows though. Still im bored during my 10-20 second respawn i want to troll my corp mates in chat.
Party: MCC Commander should be able to move people about squads quickly and easily, should also be options for people to move themselves into certain squads/positions just like eve, and i think more so needed in dust as more likely for organised merc corps to have the same people as squad commanders etc as when you join a squad/team forming for battle i would assume its just going to put you in a random spot. Would also be nice to see the same function of linking a fleet, but in dust's case a squad/team into chat and people being able to click it to join the squad then get qued/joined for battle all together. Aswell as easily being able to invite friends contacts etc ofc.
Comms: So the voice comms obviously needs to be user friendly and will eventually link into eve voice i guess, to co ordinate with eve pilots? But just thinking in terms of a fe broadcast settings bwetween dust emrcs on the gorund, though im sure others will expand on this.
Who they can broadcast to:
MCC Cmdr > Squad Leader(s) - All - Individual? Squad Leader > MCC Cmdr -Other Squad Leaders>-Their Squad Members Line Member > Squad Members - Squad Leader
Most of the time the squads on the ground are going to be to busy fighting or moving between objective to be fiddling about with channels. So something simple left on the d-pad or whatever button is free to open a menu L2-R2 to scroll, select channel? For example, Squad Cmdr need to be able to quickly cut out squad mates chatter to listen to new orders from MCC Cmdr, and then back again to relay those orders. Could there even be some sort of voice priority? So when the MCC Cmdr speak to a squad leader it would auto mute said squad leaders squad mates to make the relaying of orders easier without having to fiddle with channels and get shot while standing around?
So the thing with FPS games and comms is there can be a hell of alot of chatter as team mates are feeding intel to each other, to many people on comms is obviously going to get very chaotic so it needs to be split down, at the very least to the squad by squad basis, though i would also like to see it taken further than that tbh, split down to 2-3 man channels if people wanted.
Oh and as i and others have mentioned, there should deff be an icon telling you who is talking in the corner somewhere.
So yeah thats my few random thoughts, what would everyone else like to see when it comes to functionality and features when it comes to the Party System, Chat, and Comms? We want it to be quick and easy to team up and chat with friends/corp mates, but how do we go about it? |

pic of MAG controller layout. tap up on dpad opens a quick select comm menu and R2 L2 to cycle through the different channels like rhaps mentioned
Squad leaders need at minimum 2 channels 1 to talk to squad and 1 to talk to other squad leaders & commander (leader comms)
Commanders need at minimum 2 channels altho id like to see 4 1 to talk to squad leaders (leader comms) 1 to broadcast comms to entire team
Commanders cud also possibly get more detailed with the comms and have 4 additional channels (1 to broadcast to each squad) |

Good Post Rhapsodyy
I was just organizing my thoughts on paper with regard to community features and comms was one of the items.
MAG did actually do the chat channels in game pretty well and I certainly wouldn't mind the D-Pad used in conjunction with L2 & R2 for cycling between channels.
As far as the set up. I definitely want to see EvE's chat channel format: [Corp] [Alliance] [Squad] [User Created] and then maybe [Drone Region] for the PvE Horde...similar to incursion channel once you're on grid.
Another nice touch would be upon logging into Dust 514, it would (based on settings) automatically log you into your Corp channel.
At a bare minimum, there needs to be a way to chat with friends while you are in quarters, pre-launch grouping with comms, and 2 channels in game.

I would just like to say "push to talk". If doesn't have that, it won't work.. |

You need to be able to set up any com channel you like as in eve. It would be clunky to set up a new one in battle, like ordering a new fit, but quick to cycle through them. I am sorely disappointed this isn't coming in the next patch or two; I got the impression in the IRC they already have this working on their internal builds. |

Left is still free on the D-pad I think.
I know there is the comm window already, but a quick select with a D-Pad button is a good idea for the voice comms. |

couldnt you just press left ont the dpad wich brings up a small coms panel that brings up a list like this:
Coms Panel
[commander] [squad leaders] [Eve player]
then you could have the square button wich mutes, un mutes ..so if you highlighted comander and pressed square it would mute/un mute him, same for eve player and if you pressed square when highlighting squad leaders it mutes/un mutes all squad leaders.
press x however on squad leaders would bring up a new menu like this, where you could mute/un mute individual squad leaders with square .
Squad Leaders
[squad leader 1] [squad leader 2] [squad leader 3] [squad leader 4]
same as before you press square to mute/unmute specific squads.. this way squad members only hear there squad leader, yet squad leaders can mute / unmute other squad leaders ...so if squad 1 wanted to talk only to squad 3's squad leader he would do this:
left on dpad - press x on squad leaders , press square on sl 2 and 4 to mute them simple and fast . oh and circle to back out the coms menu..... just some random thoughts.
comander only really needs to talk to squad leaders , squad leaders need to talk to other squad leaders and the commander and there squad members ,the squad members only need to hear there squad leader. i think the above would do that in a simple way .. any thought's . good , bad ? |

on that topic, i agree MAG is indeed a very good example to follow in terms of button mapping and voice comms. At least to set the base. But i wish and hope Dust will push everything a lot deeper.
Will read your entire post tomorrow. |

Q sync to deploy together Q sync is how clan's in Mag deploy to fight against each other in Mag. Have a Chat text party with your friends invited ,have everyone in battle moon ready to click the same mission(say third one down) with a count down by a designated leader key 5,key 4,key3,key2,key 1Q everyone see's the count down if they have notifacations on. Pro clan from Mag is Q syncing currenting in dust and we are deploying together more than not
This is how you make a party system outside the game. |

like to throw a quick thought out there relating to coms, as a dropship pilot i personally feel people should be forced to listen to what i have to say while there in the drop ship, this mostly comes from the one time someone with out a mike was listening, and when i made the remark 'i wish one of my gunners would hop out and hack that supply depot so i can rep my armor back up,' one of them did, and we then continued to rain slightly annoying death down on the battle, and if you don't want to listen to me, feel free to exit the channel (aka get out of my dropship)
but in all honesty, i seriously doubt this one will ever get implemented |

Party system on console is far different to partying on PC. each feature needs to be slowly integrated and as a result should be cold released as time goes on so we know what works and what doesn't
the chat feature (along with its sub features) is a core part to how the community feels while playing the game. (Does it annoy them? encourage chat? or turn them off from comms completely)
we only want a positive from this and I can only assume through testing what works will get us what we finally want.
Now onto comms brain storming :)
Voice comms: Political -Multi tier communication gives priority over other channels -Hierarichal priority gives volume priority for emphasis and dominating over other users
Economical -Skill up to get into certain roles (e.g mcc command or what ever)
Social - All to all communication but only via Corp chat - Many to one communication lets you hear all channels while only speaking to one
Technological -Layered voice communicaiton -tiered input, shared output communication
General description Multi tier communications (depending on the roles): MCC: Contractor/Corp/Squad Leaders (Only) Squad Leaders: Corp/MCC/Squad Squad: Corp/Squad
so at most there are 3 channels, BUT:
MCC/Contractor/Team leader channels can be heard while in: Corp/Squad/Squad Leader channels
but to talk they need to assign their voice channel to the desired category to talk in there. This is so only those in the channel can hear them.
This needs to be an easy switch (I.E no viewing of the channel tabs to know which they are in!), This is because switching channels takes the user out of the game experience and puts them back in the guy on the couch. It's a major part of game play and needs to be fluid. (button combinations e.g press left analogue stick + button?)
Hierarichal volume of voice Contractor > MCC > Squad Leader > Squad member the above list is priority of voice to overpower squad members (squad members voice is lowered to emphasize this) this is so we can still hear everyone in the room, but the higher up has priority (as always). Again, NOT completely muting the player as this promotes silence in chat, something we don't want.
all squad members can talk at the same time. I've seen different games where only 1 person can talk at a time and everyone else is put on perma mute because the person on mic won't let go of control or has music pounding. This (imho) isn't right so I suggest you test this theory:
Everyone can talk at the same time, who ever presses first gets priority (higher volume) for 5-10 seconds, anyone who comes in after that, gets next priority, a kind of "pass the mic" if you will. None of this 1 man at a time BS because it kills talk. People troll/argue/play music/ whatever and it's not good for the community, which is terrible for the game.
--Promoting voice comms-- Playstation is rediculous when it comes to voice, For some insane reason, they chose not to bundle in a headset and as a result, people need to go out of their way and consider purchasing a headset - the current sony one is awesome, I'm gonna get one even though I already have a headset. But still, playstation needs to do something about the update of voice commms.... something I think CCP should help promote ;)
Text based chat is something I think doesn't really work on the ps3 unless there is a keyboard involved (regardless of size, the keys are what matter) so I think I'm going to hold on my opinions on this for now until a later stage. I think it should be implemented but VERY slowly improved upon as getting it right will be more difficult.

The most important thing I can say in regards to a party system, is that there remains an option for no-party-allowed games like on battle moons. Especially since this game is set up to encourage you to log on for at least an hour a day. People need an option for balanced quick games without dealing with the party system.
Solo pvp is hard to come by in Eve. Hopefully they don't make the same mistake with dust.
Please add random battles with completely random teams as an option. |

this would be needed to make sure the player based not in corps would keep playing!
but for party system, don't limit us to just 6 men squads. I want a full 24 of my friends when the large battles are open to us. |

Pretty much keep everything the same, just add the ability to continue to use your comms controls when dead and bleeding out,and make sure that you can communicate with everyone on your team BEFORE you even spawn out.
I'm a bit torn on the proxy chat though.I think it's great for MAG,but I just don't know if it's helpful in games anymore to get called all kinds of racial slurs and called a fa***t (rhymes with maggot) when ever you get killed by someone.I think it's time to progressively work that kind of stuff out of games. So to that,I would support the exclusion of proxy chat. |

Never played MAG, in fact Dust is the first FPS I play on a console, so sorry when I dont get your reference. However there should be at least an option to switch between push-to-talk and voice activation.
Dont have a headphone for the PS3 yet, but thought to activate voice to at least listen to the comms. As soon as I activated it while in the mercs quarter it was 10 minutes of someone in corp transmiting his little kids screaming in the background and his wife asking what the guy in question was doing.
Having "experience" of running TS nearly full time in the background for eve certainly hardens the resistance to such things, but still its a bit unsatisfactory. Especially in light of having DUST and EVE players on the same corp channel via Vivox. So if possible, please consider at least an option to switch between PTT and voice activation. |
