These are not all my ideas, but I thought that amongst the 4 or 5 threads about voice chat there should be a summary of sorts.
The identified existing issues are as follows: * Inability to know who is currently speaking * Inability to mute specific players
I would like to propose: * The ability to configure microphone sensitivity * A voice chat feedback system that allows habitually obnoxious players to be muted by default.
The solution to the existing issues is to provide an overlay (perhaps below the minimap & MCC bars) that shows the speaking player's name, and obviously a mute button that lets you get rid of them if you want. There doesn't need to be a heck of a lot of discussion about the mechanics of this idea, because the system exists in other games and has been done reasonably well with reasonably little effort.
-- THE FOLLOWING IS NOT AN ORIGINAL IDEA -- I would like to propose that when a player mutes another player, that it acts as "feedback" on their account, after a certain % of their teammates muting them, the system should start them off as default-muted when they encounter new players. This would allow the community to self-police itself in terms of voice chat conduct. Players that encounter the automatically muted player would understand that they like to play loud music, are unusually obnoxious on chat, or are outright offensive and/or are douche-bags.
Towards the technical "weighting" side of it, I feel that the more players a person mutes, the less weight their mute should have, this prevents people muting absolutely everyone (either out of ignorance for the "Disable voice chat" option, or out of malice "ha-ha everyone will be muted forever").
There are measurable statistics that can be leveraged to help improve the experience of the game in this manner, effects of the system (auto-mutes/un-mutes) do not have to be immediate things (consider a downtime job to perform the task), and would be dramatic in helping players enter into Dust 514 with a community that is not 13 year olds swearing their faces off at strangers over the Internet. Best of all, if done correctly the people blasting the music may never even know that they're not disrupting the game for the others, if done correctly it does not spoil anyone's experience.
Again, this idea is not my own creation, but I feel strongly enough about it that it should be brought to attention and given some serious thought. It could do a lot of good.

To add it would be nice to mute your mic option, because the move camera has a mic, and I am not sure what it was piking up so i just disabled it voice completely until i am going to get a headset that works for PS3. |

Null brought up a good point about the automuting being as a griefing mechanic. There are two ways to combat this from a technical point of view.
The first being the obvious one, is you apply some basic rules to the default-muted player: * Player is not automuted to their own corp-mates unless in a noob corp * Automute does not take effect until next downtime
This eliminates the immediate battle impact of muting someone.
Keep in mind you can't mute opponents, because you cannot hear them.
The purpose of the mechanic is to keep new players who are just entering the game a step away from habitiual harassers. You can always unmute someone who is automuted. |

The idea of habitual problem causers being auto muted is nice but it would need to entail ways to get yourself not automuted. (automuted "punishment" applies for a month maybe?). The person who has been muted would also need to be informed what has happened. Not to mention some people don't know that there mic is picking up EVERYTHING. Having some kind of push to talk functionality would be cool too though. ANYWAY I love the idea but it would REALLY need to be fleshed out to be a viable solution to some problems. |

We also need the ability to mute our mic in game, because some of our mics cant mute by just pressing a button on the mic. Please look at MAG's comms system, they did it perfectly. |

This is supposed to be a hardware issue, on other consoles it is not left to the game to implement a one-touch mute switch because in most cases the microphone has one built in.
The headset I`m using has a press&hold to mute, but if I need to turn and yell at my roommate to put some pants on for the love of god, I`m not going to be able to mute in combat and return to the controller.
We can`t ask CCP to fix our hardware issues (unless they`re looking to sell some Dust Headsets?). I hate that it comes down to a software issue, but I guess this is the world we live in.
Please CCP add one-touch mute to voice chat. |
